A pair of UNC first inning errors was all Sacramento State needed to defeat the Bears 5-0.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento State took advantage of Northern Colorado errors and kept the Bears bats quiet to defeat UNC 5-0 Sunday, and win the series 2-1. UNC outhit Sac State 6-2 but committed a pair of fielding errors in the first that coast them.
How It Happened
Sacramento State saw its first three batters of the game all reach by walk to begin its day at the plate to load the bases with no outs. The Hornets quickly scored the first run on a fielding error by Cole Maltese to make it 1-0. The Bears then committed its second consecutive error on the next ball put in play, when Austin Miller committed one in center field to allow two more runs home. The Hornets scored two more to make it 5-0 after the first and that's all the offense Sac State needed.
The Hornets, offense mustered just one more hit the rest of the game after the first, but starter Scott Randel and reliever Austin Roberts kept the Northern Colorado bats quiet. The Bears offense was unable to put together a rally, unable to string hits or walks together.
Game Changer
Scott Randel and Austin Roberts combined for the six-hit shutout on Sunday afternoon. The duo of pitchers stuck out 13 and walked just one.
Stat to Know
While only putting together two hits in the game, Sacramento State did a good of working the count and drew eight walks to put runners on base.
Game Notes
- Matt Burkart and Dean Lawson had a multi-hit game for UNC. Burkart went 2-for-4 with a double, while Lawson was 2-for-3.
- Northern Colorado worked counts deep but was unable to take advantage of it, striking out 13 times and walking once.

Northern Colorado returns home for a five-game homestand starting on Tuesday when Air Force comes to town for a 2 pm first pitch. The Bears and Falcons met earlier this year with Air Force winning 12-6.
