Northern Colorado-Kansas
UNC looked to keep its winning streak going Saturday afternoon against the Jayhawks with Lauren Paige in the circle for the team. Opposite of Paige was Kansas' Sarah Miller and both pitchers put up a zero in the first inning.
In the top of the second inning, Jordyn Wiatrak lead-off the inning with a home run to center field and handed UNC a 1-0 lead over the Jayhawks. Paige would pitch a scoreless second inning to hold the Lead for the Bears.
Kansas would get to Paige in the bottom of the third inning, starting with lead-off single from Madison Sykes. Two more Jayhawk singles would load the bases and Tarin Travieso would double to left center and clear them. Kansas was now in front of UNC 3-1.
After the three run third inning, Paige was replaced in the circle in the bottom of the fourth by Chandler Elsner, who recorded a complete game yesterday against Western Illinois. The Jayhawks loaded the bases against Elsner, with the help of a throwing error. A fielder's choice from Travieso would add another run and Kansas extended the lead to 4-1.
UNC would load the bases in the top of the fifth after Kenzie Kudrna singled, while both Kelli Kleis and Kaley Garcia walked. The three runners were stranded on base as Miller got Paige to ground into a fielder's choice.
Kansas would again load the bases against Elsner in the bottom of the fifth, but she was able to get a pop up to end the threat.
The Bears looked to rally in the top of the seventh inning and Sophia Taylor singled with two outs to keep the inning alive. Garcia would then single to center field to put two on with two outs. Paige would follow that up with a walk and the bases were loaded for Wiatrak, looking for her second big hit of the day. Unfortunately, Miller managed to get Wiatrak to foul out to the catcher and the game ended with a 4-1 Kansas win.
Miller pitched a complete game for the Jayhawks, while Paige was tagged with the loss.
Northern Colorado-UMKC
Valerie Vidal got the call in circle for the Bears game against UMKC and faced off with the Roos' Gabbi Morris. UNC left two runners on base in the first inning after both Madi Schmidt and Lauren Paige walked.
The Bears hitters would find their groove in the top of the second inning, when Emma Brockmann singled with one out. Rachel
Johnson stepped up to the plate and launched a ball to center field for a two-run homer and UNC took the lead over the Roos.
The game settled in after the home run, as both pitchers found their spots to control the lineups. Vidal only allowed the Roos two hits through the first four innings of the game.
In the top of the fifth inning, Cheyenne Talmadge singled to lead off the inning, and advanced to second on a UMKC error. Talmadge advanced to third on ground out and would be brought in to score by the way of a sacrifice fly from Schmidt. UNC now had a 3-0 advantage over UMKC. Vidal continued controlling the Roos' lineup, allowing another single in the bottom of the fifth, but nothing else.
UNC blew the game wide open in the top of the sixth with five runs on six hits that would put the team in position to end the game with the eight run rule. The Bears started with a pair of singles from Paige, who Kenzie Kudrna pinch ran for, and Jordyn Wiatrak. Mady Young would double to score Kudrna. Brockmann was next up for UNC and she laced a double to center field that scored Young. Morris was pulled from the circle and replaced by Lynsey Conner.
The Bears were not done in the inning as Talmadge would walk and steal second base, followed by Brockmann stealing home. Sophia Taylor and Schmidt would both walk to load the bases for Kaley Garcia. A single from Garcia would bring Talmadge and Taylor to score. UNC had built an 8-0 lead going to the bottom of the sixth with a chance to end the game early.
The Roos did not go quietly in the sixth, getting two singles and a walk with two outs to load the bases against Vidal. Despite the pressure, Vidal escaped any damage with a ground out and secured the early 8-0 victory for UNC after six innings.
Valerie Vidal earned her 11th win of the season, after pitching six scoreless innings, allowing five hits, striking out five, and walking two. The lineup produced eight runs on nine hits and also had five walks in the game to overpower the Roos' pitchers.
In their words
Shana Easley, Head Coach
"We took a good step forward today competing better overall. I really liked our offensive approach throughout the day and especially in the second game we came out swinging from the first inning and set the tone well. Against UMKC it was great to see Val throw another complete game shutout and have solid defense to back her up."
