The Bearkats hit three home runs to defeat Northern Colorado 7-3
HUNTSVILLE, TX- Northern Colorado softball was unable to sweep the series against Sam Houston State in its final game of the Bearkats Softball Classic. UNC lost 7-3, with Valerie Vidal taking the loss and the team record fell to 5-5 on the season.
Chandler Elsner started the game for UNC in the circle and she matched up against Darby Fitzpatrick.
Sam Houston State scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning, after Elsner hit Tiffany Thompson with a pitch to start the inning. Codi Carpenter would double to center field and bring Thompson around to score for a 1-0 Bearkat lead.
The offense for the Bearkats would strike again in the bottom of the third inning, by way of a two-run, home run from Brooke Malia. Sam Houston State now had a 3-0 lead over UNC.
Fitzpatrick was sharp in the circle for the Bearkats to start the game, allowing one hit and one walk over the first three innings. The Bears finally got to Fitzpatrick in the top of the fourth inning, when Jordyn Wiatrak doubled into center field to score Sophia Taylor. Kenzie Kudrna would smack a single down the left field line to score Wiatrak and pulled to within one of the Bearkats at 3-2. Fitzpatrick was relieved by Lindsey McLeod during the fourth.
Vidal would replace Elsner in the fourth inning and allowed one hit during the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings.
Sam Houston State would break the game open in the bottom of the sixth, as Malia would deliver her second home run of the day with a solo shot off of Vidal to lead-off the inning. After Vidal allowed a bunt and a walk to the Bearkats, Megan Crosby would blast a three-run homer to left field. The Bearkats had a 7-2 lead over the Bears.
Taylor would hit her own solo home run to left field in the top of the seventh to cut the lead to 7-2, but UNC's offense could not rally with any more offense.
Sam Houston State won the game 7-3 with McLeod (1-1) getting the win and Vidal (4-2) taking the loss. Vidal was tagged for four runs in two innings, on four hits, with one strikeout and a walk. The long ball hurt UNC's pitching staff, as they surrendered three in the game.
In their words
Shana Easley, Head Coach
"Sam Houston was able to take advantage of some of our mistakes and we need to learn now, early in the season, that just because we think we're the better team, doesn't guarantee a win. We're looking to clean up those mistakes and be sharper for next weekend against some good competition."
Notes
Up Next
