@UNCBearsWrestle Starts Off 2019 at the Southern Scuffle

Northern Colorado will look to build off its success in 2017 at the tournament
2019 starts fast for Northern Colorado wrestling as the team travels to compete in the Southern Scuffle, presented by Compound Sportswear in Chattanooga, Tenn. The tournament takes place from Jan. 1st through Jan. 2nd, with competition starting at 8 am(MST) both days.

A pair of UNC wrestlers continue to be listed among the best in the nation by national wrestling media outlets. Jacob Seely earns his highest ranking from The Open Mat, placing him at No. 12 in the 197 lb class. Seely is ranked No. 17 by both Trackwrestling.com and W.I.N. Magazine, while coming in at No. 19 by Flowrestling.com. Entering the Scuffle, Seely has a 5-1 record after competing in all duals this season.

Rico Montoya is ranked No. 17 by both Intermat.com and Trackwrestling, while W.I.N. slated him at No. 19. Montoya has posted a 6-2 overall record and 2-2 in dual matches in the 125 lb weight class.

UNC enters the new year with a 2-4 overall record and 0-3 in the Big 12 duals. Earlier in December, UNC picked up wins over Virginia Military Institute(35-9) and Hofstra(21-13). The Bears dropped their most recent dual against No. 3 Oklahoma State(0-47) at Bank of Colorado Arena.

At the 2018 Southern Scuffle, UNC tied for 12th place with 46 points, which is the best finish at the tournament in program history. Montoya placed fourth in the 133 lb class, marking the best individual performance for a UNC wrestler at the Scuffle. Keilan Torres also placed for the Bears, giving the team two placers at the Scuffle for the second consecutive season.

Northern Colorado opens its competition at the 2019 Southern Scuffle on Tuesday, Jan. 1st. The tournament opens with the pigtail rounds at 8 am followed by the Championship round of 32 at 8:45 am.
