Weber State topped Northern Colorado for the second time this season
There was no quit in the Bears on Thursday night, but it was not enough to get the win. Northern Colorado volleyball fell to Weber State 3-2 [18-25, 25-19, 27-25, 28-30, 11-15].
"The first and second set were similar to the way we played them on the road," head coach Lyndsey Oates said. "They were strong in the first set and we were strong in the second set. We battled back during the third after being down and got a little momentum. But we had 10 attack errors in the fourth set and four match points we could not execute. That is where the matched needed to be put away. By the time we were in the fifth set, one serving run from [Weber] was the difference."
UNC finished with a .180 attack percentage, with four Bears scoring double-digit kills. Lauren Hinrichs led UNC with a career-best 15 kills and hit .367 against the Wildcats.
"Daisy was just doing a really good job of mixing up the setting and getting me open looks. That let me find seems in their blocks so we could find the floor easy. Our passing was great," Hinrichs said. "We were hungry for a win tonight. We played them a few weeks and we were hoping to win this time. We know we are not there yet and we need to eliminate the hesitant plays."
Kortney Lockey, Jadyn McCartney, and Taylor Muff all scored 13 kills. Daisy Schultz had a strong night setting the ball, recording 59 assists and adding three kills.
The Bears rebounded after the first set, hitting .263 and scoring 17 kills in the second set. In the third set, UNC trailed the Wildcats 20-24, but orchestrated a 7-1 run to rally to win the set 27-25. The rally was powered by two kills from Lockey, a kill from Hinrichs, and an ace from Kayla Uyemura.
The fourth set would see momentum shift between both team during the final points. After trailing 23-19, UNC ripped off a 3-0 run, all points coming by way of kills from McCartney. The Wildcats would score the next point on a kill from Andrea Hale and they were now serving for set point. UNC kept its composure and got a big block from Lockey, along with a Wildcats attack error would give the Bears the lead. UNC could not close out Weber State and they would win the set on a service ace.
The Wildcats used four aces in the fifth set to close out the Bears 15-11 and win the match. Weber State won the previous meeting between the two teams in a match that also went five sets.
"It's a team that I hope we match up with in the tournament. We know them well and match up with them well. The reason I want to face them is because we need to respond differently. That is a very good team, but I want to see if we can continue to make progress. We made some steps from the first time we played them. The biggest lesson is we were too hesitant in swinging, serving, and decision making during scramble plays."
