BOX SCORE (PDF)
Sacramento, Calif – It was not a fortuitous weekend in California for Northern Colorado Softball this weekend. Facing the Hornets for the third time in two days, UNC again failed to find a victory, losing Saturday 6-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both starting pitchers had some of their best stuff working in the early parts of Saturday's contest. Through the first inning and a half, the two schools combined for only two base runners.
Not until the bottom of the second inning did the first hit of the game occur. Unfortunately, to the chagrin of Bears fans, it was a solo home run for the Hornets, taking the first lead of the game.
Sacramento State went right back to work an inning later. After Reddacliff's second strikeout of the day, the home side responded with two straight singles and a walk to load the bases. A fielder's choice brought in the second run of the game for the Hornets, but that was all they could muster, as UNC limited the damage, forcing a groundout to end the inning.
Runners on the corner in the fourth inning, brought further tension to the Bear faithful on hand. Again, not letting the game out of hand, Northern Colorado forced an inning-ending out that kept them within two.
A pair of errors in the top of the fifth inning gave UNC its first real chance to score on the afternoon. Bases loaded and two outs in the frame, head coach, Shana Easley, called in Kelli Kleis to pinch hit. On an 0-2 pitch, Kleis cracked a single to centerfield, scoring both Emily Holtz and Lauren Paige, trying the game at two.
Having lost the lead, Sacramento State worked hard to earn in back in the sixth inning. Four runs, combined with three hits and an error totaled four more runs for the Hornets.
Suddenly, the Bears were down to their final three outs, needing four runs.
Neither Kenzie Kudrna, Emily Holtz or Adeline Coldiron could come up with a hit, however. No need to bat the bottom end of the seventh, UNC was handed their third straight loss, 6-2.
KEY STAT
Hits – Northern Colorado only had a single hit Saturday, while Sacramento State had nine.
MOST VALUABLE BEAR
Kelli Kleis – Kleis tallied the Bears only hit on the afternoon, a two-RBI single in the fifth inning that tied the game momentarily at two.

-Kelli Kleis led the team with a hit and two RBI.
-Sophia Taylor led the defense with five assists, a put out and no errors.
