FINAL RESULTS
LIHUE, Hawaii – Northern Colorado men's golf finished the John A. Burns Intercollegiate on a high-note. The Bears carded their first sub-300 round of the season on Friday with 295 (+7).
Best Swings:
True freshman, Coby Welch once again came into the clubhouse with the best round of day for UNC. Welch registered an even-par 72 in the last leg of the 54-hole tournament after coming off a two-under-par round on Thursday.
Welch began the afternoon on the back nine and made quick work of the course with birdies on two of his first three holes. He remained two-under par with three holes to play, but a triple bogey on hole 10 left the freshman at one-over-par for the round.
Welch rebounded with a birdie on the very next hole and a par to finish off the 18th with a 72. Welch moved up 12 spots on the leaderboard in the final day to earn a Top 35 finish. With 218 (76, 70, 72 = +2) total, Welch tied for 32nd in the 109-member field.
Eric Chen had the next best round for Northern Colorado. After a rocky start to the tournament, the sophomore was able to walk away with a 73 (+1) in the finale.
Chen birdied three holes on the day, but two bogeys and a double tipped him to one-over for the round, but the score was still six strokes better than his next best round of the invite.
Chen finished with a 233 (81, 79, 73 = +17) and came in 97th overall.
Sophomore, Josh Matz and junior, Sam Marley each signed off on a 75 (+3), putting a cap on their solid tournaments.
Matz, who shot 75 for third straight round, ended the intercollegiate with a 225 (75, 75, 75 = +9), tying for 75th in the standings.
Marley was able to take three strokes off his second round total with the 75 on Friday and end his 54-holes with a 226 (73, 78, 75 = +10), just one stroke off of Matz. The junior tied for 78th overall.
Junior, Andrew Romano concluded the day for the Bears. Romano fired a 78 (+6) in his last 18 holes, bringing his tournament total to a 238 (80, 77, 78 = +19). He finished 99th.
Team Results:
UNC shot its best round of the 54-holes, mailing in a 295 on the afternoon. The finish was good enough to bump them up to 16th in the team standings with a final score of 899 (304, 300, 295 = +35).
In Their Words:
Head Coach, Roger Prenzlow
"We played much better today and actually had a good chance to play a really good round. It will be nice to get home and get to work on our short game as they let us down. Coby and Li [Eric] played very solid other than one hole each. Sam and Josh were consistent all tournament and look like they will a good spring as their games are maturing. WE will come out in Dallas in a few weeks and play better if we get our short games in order."
Up Next:
