FINAL RESULTS
DALLAS, Texas – Northern Colorado men's golf wrapped up the Bob Sitton Invitational on Thursday. The team carded a 309 (+25) to finish 14th on the leaderboard.
Best Swings:
A windy day at the TPC Four Seasons left UNC battling the conditions for the entire final round.
Sophomore, Josh Matz brought in the team's low round of the afternoon with a 75 (+4).
He secured two birdies throughout the 18 holes, including one on hole 17 to put him at two-over with one to play. Unfortunately, a double bogey on the last hole pushed the sophomore to four-over-par for the round.
Matz's 54-hole total came out to be a 222 (73, 74, 75 = +9), tying for 32nd place.
The next best round came from true freshman, Coby Welch. Welch finished one stroke back of Matz with a 76 (+5), but had the tournament finish for the Bears.
Welch was able to solidify a Top 25 performance, tying for 25th with a 220 (70, 74, 76 = +7).
Juniors, Andrew Romano and Sam Marley came in the final two scoring rounds for Northern Colorado. The duo each recorded a 79 (+8).
Marley completed his tournament with a three-day total of 235 (79, 77, 79 = +22), tying for 103rd, while Romano signed off on a 236 (76, 81, 79 = +23), placing 106th, respectively.
Sophomore, Li Chen ended the event for UNC, coming into the clubhouse with an 80 (+9). He had the third-best placement on the team, tying for 38th with a 223 (71, 72, 80 = +10).
Arkansas State won the team title at the invite. The Red Wolves compiled a team score of 852 (E). ASU's Zan Luka Stirn also came away with the individual title with a 206 (-7).
Team Score:
The elements cause some problems for UNC. The Texas winds hindered the Bears to a 309 (+25), their highest round of the tournament. The team fell nine spots on the leaderboard to finish 14th in the 24-team field with a total of 896 (290, 297, 309 = +44).
In Their Words:
Head Coach, Roger Prenzlow
"The guys are upset, as they should be, but we did do some really good stuff in this event. At the end, we cost ourselves about six places in the standings by not coping well with the wind on some difficult holes like 17 and 18. All the guys played well most of the time, but big numbers on holes cost them all and us as a team. Like I said to the team, learn and move on. We are a good team that had a bad round. We will move on and practice well for our next meet."
Up Next:
The Bears will hit the links again at the end of March, heading to Palo Alto, California to compete in The Goodwin, hosted by Stanford on March 30 through April 1.
