Northern Colorado is ready to make some noise at one of the most competitive tournaments
GREELEY, Colo.— Northern Colorado wrestling travels to Las Vegas, Nev. for the annual Cliff Keen Invitational Friday and Saturday. The Bears return to action for the two-day meet after a few weeks away from competition and look to turn the hard work at practice into titles.
Dylan Gabel competed well at last year's Cliff Keen Invitational, where he advanced to the second day of the tournament. Gabel is coming off of a championship at the Northern Colorado Open and hopes to continue competing at a high level. Gabel is currently ranked 15th in the 184 lb weight class by both W.I.N Magazine and Intermat.com.
Rico Montoya and Keilan Torres both turned in solid performances at last year's competition and look to advance to the second day in Las Vegas. Montoya started the 2017-18 season with a title in the 133 lb weight class with a victory over Wyoming's Montorie Bridges at the Cowboy Open. Montoya would, however, lose the following week to Bridges in the finals during the Northern Colorado Open.
Torres recorded three pins to start the season at the Cowboy Open, before losing in the finals of the 165 lb weight class. Torres did not compete in the Northern Colorado Open but is eager to get back to his winning ways. The redshirt-senior is ranked 13th by Intermat and 14th by W.I.N.
This year's Cliff Keen Invitational continues the reputation of being one of the toughest tournaments of the season. Some of the top-ranked programs in the country will travel to Las Vegas, including Ohio State, Michigan, Arizona State, Iowa, Virginia Tech, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northern Iowa, and Oregon State. UNC will also see familiar opponents in Wyoming and Air Force, who both competed in the Cowboy Open and Northern Colorado Open earlier this season.
The Cliff Keen Invitational begins on Friday, Dec. 1st, with weigh-ins starting at 8 am MT and round one starting at 10 am. The first day concludes with round six championship quarterfinals at 7 pm. On Saturday, Dec. 2nd, round eight championship semifinals start at 11 am, with the finals starting at 4 p.m.
