UNC's cross country team finished seventh on the men's side and ninth for the women at the Big Sky Cross Country Championship
OGDEN, Utah – Northern Colorado closed out its 2017 cross country season at the Big Sky Championships Saturday morning in Ogden, Utah. The men finished in seventh, while the women took ninth place.
Northern Arizona repeated as champions both on the men's and women's side, edging out Southern Utah in the men's race and Montana State in the women's.
Freshman Stephen Haas finished with the best time of the day for the men as he ran the 8K course in a time of 25:46.1 to finish 32nd overall. The trio of Tristan Irish, Jeremy Romero and Joshua Rogerson finished in spots 53-55, respectively. Irish timed in at 26:31.9 to finish 1.1 seconds ahead of Romero and 5.8 seconds ahead of Rogerson.
The Bears men finished with a team score of 238 to finish one point ahead of Sacramento State for seventh place.
On the women's side, senior Katy East finished her final collegiate cross country meet with a 31st place finish by running the course in a time of 18:19.4. Teammate Cammy Sargent didn't finish much behind East for a 37th place finish in a time of 18:27.9.
UNC's women earned a ninth-place team spot with a score of 264. Just like the men, they edged out conference foe Southern Utah for that ninth spot and were 46 points behind Eastern Washington for eighth.
Shick's Takes
About the men's finish
"The men's team has come so far. Each one of these guys from the beginning of the year had big personal and team goals. We knew after last year (outdoor) our identity was evolving for this group. They have completely bought in and have done everything asked of them and that has proven to be successful. Right now it's the right combination of coach and athlete communication and motivation, I'm so very proud of Coach Robbins and the men's distance squad. It's a great end of the conference season and I think we will continue to see so inspiring things ahead"
On the women's performance
"The women's team is still improved from last year but we just haven't seemed to find our consistency in racing this year outside of senior Katy East being our lead runner. She's done a great job leading. Enough cannot be said also about junior Cami Sargent, she is so tough and continues to run with guts. She's a middle distance runner, so for her to be our number two runner, means we need to do some things different moving forward. Overall, these women have so much desire to be great, we just have a little bit more work to do so that that is seen in conference results"
The meet on Saturday concluded the 2017 cross country season for UNC, and now it's time for the distance runners to prepare for the indoor season. Northern Colorado's first indoor meet of the year is set for December 8 at the Wyoming Power Meet.
