FINAL ROUND RESULTS
SIMI VALLEY, Calif. - Junior Joshua Matz continued his excellent play in California with a third straight round under par to put the finishing touches on a top 5 finish at the Bill Cullum Invitational. After starting his day with a double-bogey on his second hole, Matz was near flawless the rest of the way. He would record four birdies and 12 pars the rest of the way for a two-under par 70. Matz's fifth place finish is the highest individual finish by a UNC golfer this season.
It was a disappointing day as a team, shooting a collective 11-over par to finish the tournament at 21-over par and in 11th place.
Junior Li Chen stepped up for the Bears contributing a three-over par 75. Chen's round was highlighted by an eagle on the par 5 second hole. Senior Andrew Romano chipped in a four-over par 78 and Sophomore Coby Welch added a six-over par 78 to conclude the team scoring.
Welch would finish the tournament in a tie for 41st at six-over par. Romano tied for 56th shooting ten-over par. Senior Sam Marley tied for 71st at +15 and Chen tied for 81st at +20.

"Other than Joshua, things were a struggle the entire event here at Wood Ranch CC. For the most part we did not respond well to adversity and let bad breaks get to us then compounded problems with poor decision making. As I told the guys, the only way to make this a positive is to learn from it and move on. Also, one bad tournament does not make a bad year. Thank goodness we have tons of talent. As a team we made plenty of birdies, but big numbers of a few holes got us in the end. Seeing Joshua play well in his home town area was exciting for him and the team. He really competed well and beat some excellent collegiate players."
