GREELEY, Colo. – In the first of the two Big 12 and Pac 12 showdowns this weekend at Bank of Colorado Arena, Northern Colorado fell 31-15 to Oregon State University on Friday night.
How It Happened:
It was another tough loss for the Bears, bringing their record to 0-5 on the season so far. Only three wrestlers managed to grab wins tonight, with [125] Trey Andrews, [165] Keilan Torres, and [184] Dylan Gabel all coming out victorious.
Andrews won via decision, while Torres and Gabel both collected falls. This marks the second time in three duals where both Torres and Gabel have put six points on the board for the Bears.
With a traditional start to the dual at 125 lbs., Andrews grabbed the only lead of the night for the Bears, after he managed to win 5-4 over Kegan Calkins.
In what was a back and forth match, Andrews secured a takedown with 24 seconds left in the match, and rode out Calkins to put the Bears up 3-0.
The Bears lost the next four matches, which included [141] Timmy Box, who prior to the match was undefeated in the dual season at 4-0. The Beavers amassed two pins, a major decision, and a decision, which pushed the team score to 19-3 at the intermission.
After the break, Torres came out guns blazing, taking down his opponent Rodney Williams in the first 8 seconds of the match. It was all downhill from there for Torres, as he racked up two, 2-point nearfall counts, before pinning Williams with 1:45 seconds left in the first period.
Unlike Torres, Gabel wrestled at a bit of a slower pace, but still dominated the entire match.
After a takedown within the first minute of the first period, Gabel was able to ride out Bob Coleman of Oregon State for the entire first period. In the second period, Gabel escaped in two seconds, and took down Coleman once more before the second period finished. In the third period, Gabel could not turn Coleman, so he strategically gave Coleman the escape in order to take him back down and work for bonus points in the team score.
The strategy paid off, as Gabel snagged two more takedowns, before pinning Coleman in an Iranian scramble position, which gave temporary emotion and life back into the team and crowd.
The Bears dropped the next two matches which bought the final score to 31-15.
In Their Words:
Head Coach, Troy Nickerson
"Once again, we had some guys wrestle hard and compete, and others did not perform up to our expectations. As a whole, we are inconsistent and will need to improve on this heading into Sunday's match against Boise State. Another area of improvement will be our mat awareness and understanding certain situations in a match. We will continue to work hard, and improve these areas and come out swinging Sunday afternoon."
The Bears will be back in action Sunday, Jan. 15 afternoon at 2:00 p.m. (MT) to square off against Boise State.
