Day 1 Results
Colorado Springs, Colo – In their 2017 return to pool, Northern Colorado Swim and Dive took on an in-state rival in Air Force and a WAC foe in Seattle University. Day one in Colorado Springs proved bountiful for the Bears as they came away with their fifth win of season, splitting the day's action with a win against Seattle, 115-99, while also falling to the Falcons, 131-90.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Northern Colorado came out firing in the 400-yard medley relay. A season-best time of 3:55.31, four seconds faster than their previous season-best mark, which was good enough for a second place finish in the heat. Air Force edged out the team of Valeria Mihhailova, Leilani Herrera, Laura Ramirez and Sydney Kimura by less than two tenths of a second.
Kovar, and senior Carleigh Barrett, each took to the blocks in the 1000-yard freestyle. The duo of Bears placed second and third respectively, adding to team's point totals in the double duel format.
The Blue and Gold had difficulty finding a rhythm in the middle section of the meet, failing to place in the 200-yard freestyle, 50-yard freestyle and 200-yard IM.
The diving break, however, allowed the swimmers to catch their breath, while also presenting freshmen Allyson Wood a chance to step to the spotlight. Wood, competing in the Platform for only the third time this season, stood atop all four of the Falcon's divers to claim the crown with a score of 194.03.
Once the meet returned to the swimming pool, the Bears were ready to right the ship, winning heats in two out of the next three events. Carleigh Barrett won the 200-yard Butterfly, and not to be outdone, Valeria Mihhailova touched the wall first in the 200-yard back stroke, another season-best.
Rounding out day one, Northern Colorado swimmers took second place in 500-yard yard freestyle, 200-yard breast stroke and the 200-yard freestyle relay.
BEST PERFORMANCE
Carleigh Barrett – Second place in the 1000-yard freestyle and a first place finish in the 200-yard butterfly.
UP NEXT
The Bears will have one nights rest before facing the Red Hawks and Falcons once again in Colorado Springs on Saturday. The final day of competition is set to begin at 11 AM.
