GREELEY, Colo. – The 2016 Northern Colorado Cross Country season begins this Friday at the Colorado State Invite.
The Bears will run in five events this season including the Big Sky Conference Championship on Oct. 28 in Moscow, Idaho.
Northern Colorado will have a new, but familiar face overseeing the distance runners this season in Matthew Robbins. Robbins is entering his sixth season being a part of the track and field/cross country staff, but his first overseeing the XC program.
UNC returns nine runners on the women's side, including five of the seven that competed in last season's Big Sky Championship in Erin Thomas, Cammy Sargent, Cami Kennedy and Alicia Thompson.
The men bulked their roster adding 10 new faces to the team. Much like the women's team, the men's side returns five of its six runners that competed in last season's Conference Championship in Kingston Wagner, Tim Corrie, Tristan Irish, Nick Bailey and Lucas Mielke.
The Big Sky Conference released its 2016 XC Coaches' Polls. After placing 11th and 12th in 2015's League Championship with an extremely young, but talented squad, the coaches of the conference gave the same outlook for this season's Bears.
The men's team was pegged to finish 12th and the women 11th. The Northern Arizona men and Weber State women were strongly favored as the preseason favorites. The Wildcat women received 141 out of a possible 144 points while the Lumberjack men were a unanimous top choice in the polls, which were released by the league office Tuesday. Coaches were allowed to vote for their own teams.
