The senior went 0-2 on Day I of the Championships to close out the Bears' 15-16 season
NEW YORK CITY – Trent Noon competed in the first day of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships on Thursday, going 0-2 on the day. His two losses brought his NCAA Tournament to a close, as well as his collegiate wrestling career.
"It's a tough tournament," head coach Troy Nickerson said. "I believe Trent wrestled the best he has all season. That's just the way it happens sometimes. Trent had a great career as a Bear and we are proud of him."
In his first match of the day in Session I, Noon faced the No. 4 seed – Nathan Burak of Iowa. The match was a back and forth battle the entire time, starting with the first period ending scoreless.
Burak opted for the down position to start the second period, and Noon managed to hold him down for 24 seconds before giving up the escape. No other scoring occurred within the two minute period.
Noon had an even quicker escape of his own after choosing down in the third, but time expired before either wrestler could land another scoring move.
The first sudden victory period was close, with a huge scramble on the edge nearing the end.
Burak managed to escape in 12 seconds in the first tie-breaker period, with Noon landing another fast escape in the second 30-seconds to tie it back up at 2-2. The match came to a close in the second sudden victory, with Burak getting the takedown to make it a 4-2 final.
Noon's loss in the round of 32 knocked him to the back-side of the bracket, where he faced Cornell's Owen Scott during Session II. Scott dominated most of the match, getting a takedown early to take the lead. Noon made it 2-1 with an escape by the end of the first period, but an escape and late takedown in the second period extended Scott's advantage to 5-1.
Noon opted for the down position to go into the final period of the match, getting an escape to cut into Scott's lead. A takedown for Scott, plus a reversal for Noon with just 15 seconds left on the clock, left the match at 7-4 (Cornell), and a penalty point gave Scott the win at 8-4.
Noon's season came to an end with an overall record of 24-10, with three major decisions, one technical fall, and six pins (including a team-fastest at 0:33).
