LIHU'E, KAU'I, Hawaii. – Northern Colorado men's golf wrapped up round three of the John Burns Intercollegiate on Friday. The team shot a 314 in the final day of play ending with a 928 (+64) overall.
The 314 was the highest round of the tournament for the Bears after posting a 303 and 311 in the first two days.
"When teams are uncomfortable with the conditions and greens, the dam usually breaks and it did for the Bears today," head coach Roger Prenzlow said about the performance. "The guys worked hard, but it seemed the harder they tried the worse it got for us. I feel bad for them, but we must not flinch and compete on."
Senior Steven Kupcho led the team in the final day of play, shooting a 76 (+4).
Kupcho marked 12 pars and a birdie throughout the round, but had two bogeys on the front and three on the back to go along with it.
At the turn, the senior was just +1 over and maintained consistency on the back with six pars, but bogeyed the 11th, 14th and 16th to finish +4 over par.
Kupcho signed off on a 229 (74, 79, 76) and tied for 76th on the leaderboard.
Freshman Josh Matz was just two strokes behind Kupcho, walking into the clubhouse with a 231 (75, 77, 79) after Friday's round of 79 (+7).
Matz tallied three birdies throughout his day, but unfortunately had 10 bogeys to go along with it.
The freshman completed the Intercollegiate +15 over and finished tied for 80th overall.
Fellow freshman Eric Chen posted another 79 (+7) in his last 18 holes of the meet, tying his score from yesterday.
Chen started and ended the front nine with a birdie, but two doubles on the 3rd and 7th left him heading into the back nine at +4 over.
The newcomer carded six pars and three bogeys on the last half of the course to finish at +7 over for the day.
Chen fired a 239 (81, 79, 79) and tied for 92nd place.
Sophomore Sam Marley and Senior Conner Barr completed the afternoon with rounds of 80 (+8) and 82 (+10).
Outside of two holes where Marley doubled and tripled, he played relatively well, totaling 11 pars and one birdie. He also had a streak of six straight holes with par, the best on the day for the team.
Marley capped off the three-day meet shooting a 232 (76, 76, 80) and had the third best tournament for UNC. He finished tied for 82nd.
Barr had a difficult final day, scoring two doubles and two bogeys on holes 2 through 5, coming in at +7 over after the front nine.
Like his teammates, he too had a strong back nine with six pars and three bogeys to complete his +10 over round.
Barr tied with Chen at 239 (78, 79, 82) for 92nd overall.
"It is nice that we will have three weeks or so to prepare for our next event," Prenzlow added. "In that time hopefully we can get our golf swings and putting routines feeling more comfortable."
The men's golf team has a short break from competition with their next event coming on March 17 when they co-host the Desert Collegiate with Denver in Goodyear, Ariz.
