FORT LEWIS, Colo. - The 2016 All-Colorado teams were announced by the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame – Colorado Chapter. Three UNC players were honored.
Return specialist, Hakeem Deggs, linebacker, Kyle Newsom and defensive end, Mikhail Dubose all earned Second Team recognition. In addition, this was the first time the trio had been selected on the All-Colorado team.
Deggs, a redshirt junior, was good for 523 return yards this season on 27 tries, for a 20.85-yard average. It wasn't just his returning abilities though that makes him recognizable throughout the Centennial State. Deggs also racked up four tackles on the kickoff and punt coverage units. The 523 return yards was a career-high. The redshirt junior was also a First Team All-Big Sky selection for the second consecutive season.
Newsom, a senior backer, racked up the second most tackles of any linebacker in Colorado, only behind CU's Kenneth Olugbode, who finished with 130 on the season.
Newsom tallied 121 stops on the season, finishing with six games in double-digits and notched 17 or more tackles for three consecutive weeks to end the season, including a career-best 18 in the loss at Cal Poly.
The senior padded his stat line with 8.0 tackles for a loss, 3.5 sacks, two pass breakups and a fumble recovery. Newsom finished as the Big Sky's tackle leader and was awarded Second Team All-Conference honors.
Dubose, a senior defensive end, rounded out the honorees for Northern Colorado.
Dubose had his hand in a little bit of everything on defense this season. He recorded 59 tackles, including 7.5 TFLs and 2.5 sacks. Dubose was also accountable for two quarterback hurries and two pass breakups. He forced a team-high two fumbles, recovering one of them, as well as blocking two kicks, in the same game.
The senior blocked a punt, and returned it for a touchdown, as well as a PAT in the win over Montana, the first time in 40 seasons UNC defeated the Griz.
