Scouting Northern Colorado (Game Notes)
- Northern Colorado is coming of an 81-64 loss at Colorado State last weekend. The Bears kept it close in the first half (34-33), but the Rams were able to get to the foul line 21 times in the second half to pull away from UNC.
- The Bears are still in search of that first true road victory as they sit 0-5 on the season. In contrast to that, Denver is still searching for its first home win of the season as they are 0-2 at Magness Arena.
- Sophomore guard, Jordan Davis continues to lead Northern Colorado in scoring and assists. Davis is currently averaging 21.4 points per game, as well as 5.9 assists through nine games.
- Davis' brother, Gerad Davis saw his first action of the season at CSU after recovering from a knee injury. G. Davis put up respectable numbers, finishing with 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting, as well as hauling in four rebounds.
- Despite the brutal road schedule against three 2016 NCAA tournament teams, the Bears are still showing up to play. UNC has outscored its opponents in the first half, 341-329.
- The Bears are currently 45-77 all-time against Denver.
Scouting Denver
- Denver has won three out of its last five games after a Tuesday night win on the road at Southern Alabama, 64-51. The Pioneers hold a 4-3 record on the road, but have yet to win at home inside Magness Arena, sitting with an 0-2 record.
- DU has already faced three Big Sky opponents this season, making out with a 2-1 record. They have notched wins over Weber State (57-55) and Sacramento State (72-61). It's lone loss came at Eastern Washington, falling in overtime 85-80.
- The Pios currently sport three players averaging double figures on the season. Joe Rosga leads DU with 17.2 ppg, followed by Daniel Amigo (15.1 ppg) and C.J. Bobbitt (10.4 ppg).
- Denver's stingy defense has been preventing opponents from shooting the three-ball. On the season, they've been holding opponents to just 28.8% on three-point field goals. That percentage is a Summit League best and ranks them 30th in the country.
- The Pioneers returned just one starter from last season in sophomore, Joe Rosga and are very similar to UNC in the fact that the majority of their team minutes come from freshman and sophomores.
Bears' Last Time Out
- After beating Colorado State at home last season, the favor was returned by the Rams as Northern Colorado suffered an 81-64 loss Saturday afternoon inside Moby Arena.
- Redshirt sophomore guard, Chaz Glotta led UNC on the afternoon with 18 points, 15 of those coming from beyond the arc. He finished 5-of-11 (45.5%) from three-point range. Davis finished with 17 points and added six rebounds and five assists in the loss.
- Offensive rebounds played a major role in the game as CSU was able to come down with 17 o-boards, scoring 19 second chance points, while UNC was able to haul in just nine offensive rebounds, good for seven second chance points.
- In his first game this season for the Bears, junior guard, Gerad Davis finished in double figures with 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting.
Wild Ending At The Bank
- Last season's 81-77 loss to Denver in Greeley came with some controversy.
- With 7.6 seconds to play, Anthony Johnson drove to the basket and was fouled in the process of shooting. There was also a player control foul with the UNC player running into a Denver defender, and a subsequent made shot following all contact. However, the official called a jumpball, negating the play and turning the ball over to DU on alternate possessions.
- Since there was no way to determine if the initial foul created the genesis of the player control foul, that foul would have been negated. Further, even had a double foul been called, NCAA rules would have negated the basket but returned the ball to UNC at the point of interruption.
Crystal Ball
- Based on his performance over the last nine games, sophomore guard, Jordan Davis is on pace to reach some impressive numbers this season.
- Davis has already scored 193 points on the year and is currently on pace to finish with 642, which would make him just the second player in the program's Division I to score 600 points in a season, the first being former guard, Devon Beitzel who recorded 687 in the 2010-11 season.
- Furthermore, Davis is on pace to shatter the UNC D1 single-season assist record of 106 set by Elliott Lloyd in 2010-11. Averaging 5.9 dishes per game this season, Davis would end the year with 176, should he maintain that average. Davis currently leads all of the Big Sky, with the next closest player averaging 4.7 a game.
Against The Summit
- Northern Colorado currently holds an overall record of 138-153 against the Summit League, having played eight of its nine members.
- UNC has the most wins over Denver in the Summit League, but also has the most losses against the Pioneers with a 45-77 overall record.
- The Bears are currently 1-2 when playing DU on Dec. 17, while holding an overall record of 7-18 in games played on the date.
Ranking Them
- Despite holding a 3-6 record, UNC boasts an RPI ranking of 180 in the NCAA, this is the second best RPI in the conference next to only Eastern Washington, who comes in at 57.
- The Bears have cracked the Top 100 in the country in three-point field goals per game (74th) with 8.9 and fewest turnovers (92nd) with 118.
