FORT COLLINS, Colo. – After beating Colorado State (8-2, 0-0 Mountain West) at home last season, the favor was returned by the Rams as Northern Colorado (3-6, 0-0) suffered an 81-64 loss Saturday afternoon inside Moby Arena.
How It Happened:
It was the same tale, just a different opponent for the Bears. UNC made it a manageable game in the first half as a solid defensive effort never let the CSU lead build by more than six points.
Three-pointers kept the Bears in the game as they made six in the first 20 minutes.
However, Northern Colorado got off to sloppy start, not finding the hoop until four minutes into the game.
The Rams built a 10-4 lead with 13:55 to play off a Devocio Butler three-ball, but it didn't last long as the Bears started to get hot from beyond the arc.
UNC scored its next 15 points on three-pointers, with three of those makes coming from redshirt sophomore guard, Chaz Glotta, but Colorado State remained out in front by one, 20-19 with seven minutes to go.
CSU was able to push its advantage to seven (32-25) as the Bears went through a dry spell on the offensive end of the floor.
Northern Colorado was able to push through and end the half on a 6-0 run to make it 34-33.
Glotta led UNC at the half with 12 points, while sophomore guard, Jordan Davis had nine. Davis was held scoreless for the first 15 minutes of the contest, but proceeded to finish 3-of-5 from the floor after going 0-for-4 to start.
The second half began the same for UNC, going without a make for the first four minutes. This time though, Colorado State was able to take advantage of the Bears' scoreless
streak, going on a 9-0 run to make it a double-digit difference, 44-34.
Northern Colorado was able to chip away at the CSU advantage, getting it down into single digits three different occasions, but another run by the Rams, this one of a 12-0 nature, put the Bears into a hole they could not climb out of.
Glotta led UNC on the afternoon with 18 points, 15 of those coming from beyond the arc. He finished 5-of-11 (45.5%) from three-point range. Davis finished with 17 points and added six rebounds and five assists in the loss.
CSU's Butler led all scorers in the game with 19 points.
Game Changer:
In his first game back this season, Colorado State's Gian Clavell played a big role in the Rams' victory, scoring 13 of his 15 points in the second half.
Key Stat:
Offensive rebounds played a major role in the game as CSU was able to come down with 17 o-boards, scoring 19 second chance points, while UNC was able to haul in just nine offensive rebounds, good for seven second chance points.
In Their Words:
Head Coach, Jeff Linder:
"I thought in the first half we really didn't play great, what we ended up doing was making threes. We made six and then Chaz [Glotta] gets fouled at the end, so really it was seven threes in the first half. I thought our defense in the first half was really good and I thought for the most part we kept them off the glass."
"In the second half you really saw the difference between juniors and seniors playing against freshman and sophomores. A lot of teams can rebound with those guys for twenty minutes, but the test of how good you are as a team is if you can rebound with them for forty and we were unable to do that."
"In both halves we really struggled to score the ball. I don't think we scored for the first three and a half minutes of both halves. I thought we had a good opportunity coming out in the second half with ball and we got what we wanted, but for whatever reason we didn't execute."
Notables:
- In his first game this season for the Bears, junior guard, Gerad Davis finished in double figures with 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting.
- UNC finished the game shooting 36% (22-of-61) from the field and 29% (10-of-34) on three-point field goals.
- Colorado State outrebounded Northern Colorado 50-35. The Rams also outscored the Bears 34-18 in the paint.
- Northern Colorado remains winless on the road, falling to 0-5 on the season in true road games.
- UNC fouled Colorado State 14 times in the second half, allowing the Rams to go 15-of-21 at the free throw line.
Up Next:
The Bears will continue their tour of Colorado next week as they head down I-25 to Denver to take on the Pioneers in another afternoon matinee. Tip against Denver is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 17. UNC will be back at home on Tuesday, Dec. 20 against UC Riverside. Tickets are just $1 online with the promo code COUNTDOWN16.
