PDF BOX SCORE
OGDEN, Utah – Foul trouble and missed opportunities at the free throw line plagued Northern Colorado (4-12, 1-3 Big Sky) on Saturday night. The Bears had three players exit the game and were 18-of-34 (52.9%) from the charity stripe in the 85-68 loss at Weber State (11-5, 3-0 Big Sky).
Ibrahim Sylla, Tanner Morgan and Jamal Evans all fouled out for UNC, aiding in the team's ninth straight regular season loss at the Dee Events Center.
Redshirt sophomore, Jeremy Verhagen led Northern Colorado on the night with 14 points and added a team-high six rebounds.
Both freshman and junior guards, Jordan Davis and Dallas Anglin pitched in 11 points and junior guard, Jordan Wilson finished with 10 points.
Wilson has now extended his double figures streak to 16 straight games, just one game away from tying the Division I record of 17 games with 10 points or more set by former guard, Will Figures in the 2009-10 season.
"I'm really proud of the way we competed – the score was not indicative of this game," head coach B.J. Hill said. "If we make free throws like we did in the first twelve games of the year where we shot nearly eighty percent – if we do that tonight it's a two possession game going into the final media timeout and that's exactly where you want to be in the arena."
The Bears opened the game shooting, making its first four shots and played even with Weber State for the majority of the first half.
A scoring drought midway through the half opened the door for the Wildcats and they took advantage, scoring six straight to take its largest lead of the night at that point, 21-14 with 10:44 to go.
WSU pushed its lead to as many ten (33-23), but an 8-2 run by Northern Colorado capped off by Wilson three ball made it a 35-31 ball game with 4:14 to play until intermission.
Wilson hit one more shot from deep before the half ended sending the Bears into the locker room behind by just six, 40-34.
"We didn't get the clean looks at three that we usually get and you have to get them credit. Randy (Rahe) is a great coach," Hill added. "They have system that's devised amongst their personnel, meaning they really push up and pressure you on the perimeter because they know if you beat them off the bounce they have multiple guys on the inside that can protect the rim."
UNC was just 5-of-15 (33.3%) from the line in the first half, but shot well from the floor, connecting on 13-of-26 (50.0%) attempts.
The second half is where fatigue and foul trouble took its toll on the team as they sent the Wildcats to the line 19 times in the final 20 minutes with WSU making 13 of those.
UNC played with a six to twelve point deficit for the first 14 minutes of the second act, refusing to go away thanks to stout defensive play.
From 6:26 to 4:30 remaining is when Evans, Morgan and Sylla all exited the ball game and the exact point when Weber State took a commanding lead.
A decisive 6-0 run from WSU put the Bears down 77-59, a deficit they could not come back from.
Weber State's Jeremy Senglin and Joel Bolomboy finished with 15 and 14 points, respectively, with Bolomboy hauling in a game-high 17 rebounds.
As a team, UNC finished the night 23-of-51 (45.1%) from the floor and just 4-of-13 (30.8%) from beyond the arc.
The guys from Greeley return home next Thursday and Saturday hosting the state of Montana inside Bank of Colorado Arena. UNC plays Montana on Jan.14 and follow it up with Montana State on Jan. 16.
"We have a lot we can build on. We have to come back practice and emphasis our discipline defensively so we don't foul," Hill finished with. "I feel much better about our team tonight than I did forty eight hours ago."
STAT OF THE GAME:
- The Bears did not live up to their season averages in shooting. UNC is the second best free throw shooting team in the conference and the best three-point shooting team, percentage wise. From the line the team averages 73.2% and from downtown, 39.8%. Tonight they shot just 52.9% from the charity stripe and 30.8% from beyond the arc.
