PDF BOX SCORE
POCATELLO, Idaho – Despite a late game rally, Northern Colorado (4-11, 1-2 Big Sky) dropped its sixth road game of the season at Idaho State (6-8, 1-1 Big Sky) 83-78 on Thursday night.
The Bears didn't lead at any point during the game and allowed the Bengals to shoot 50.0% (24-of-48) from the field.
Junior guard, Dallas Anglin poured in a career-best 31 points in the loss, with 25 of those coming in the final 20 minutes of the game. Anglin finished 11-of-18 (61.1%) from the floor and chipped in eight makes on nine attempts from the free throw line.
It was the first time since the 2011-12 season that a Bear scored 30 points or more. Former guard, Tevin Svihovec was the last to do it, dropping 34 points in the 81-73 win over Cal Poly on Feb. 18, 2012.
Guards, Anthony Johnson, Jordan Wilson and Jordan Davis had 10 points each in the defeat. Wilson added a team-high six assists and now has 20 assists in the last three games (6.7 apg).
"Every day is a new lesson and today's lesson was, it's just not about game time in terms of when you earn your win," said head coach B.J. Hill. "You earn your win on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday – shoot around on Thursday. At every opportunity you have to be dialed in mentally, physically and give it everything you have and we had a complete team who did not show up mentally today."
UNC 's offense had another productive evening shooting a respectable 46.7% (28-of-60) from the floor and 80.0% (16-of-20) from the free throw line.
Idaho State jumped out to 15 point lead (20-5) just seven minutes into the game, a lead they wouldn't relinquish for the rest of the night.
Playing from behind, the Bears slowly worked back into the game, cutting the deficit to six (25-19) off a Johnson three-ball at the 8:09 mark, but that is as close as they would come for the rest of the half.
Northern Colorado headed into the locker room down 16 (48-32).
UNC gave up six threes in the first half, allowing Idaho State to shoot 46.2% from beyond the arc.
The game was once again a tale of Jekyll and Hyde as the Bears tightened up its perimeter defense in the second half, holding the Bengals to just one three on six attempts (16.1%).
A series of runs in the first 10 minutes of the second half cut the ISU lead down to single digits and a three-point play the old fashioned way from Anglin got the Bears to back within six (59-53) with nine minutes to go.
A UNC turnover and six straight points from Idaho State put Northern Colorado right back at square one (65-53).
"The foul count is on us – we're not good enough defensively. We're not owning our defense, we're not owning our effort on the defensive end," Hill added. "Until that changes and that starts with our upper classmen. Until everyone feels that they are committed to that, it's not going to change."
A layup from Wilson with 1:18 left on the clock made it a nine point game (78-69) and sparked a run, primarily at the hands of Anglin.
In the final minute of play the junior scored nine straight points and helped the team get within two points (80-78) of Idaho State, but the Bengals would seal the victory at the free throw line.
Northern Colorado now travels to Ogden, Utah to face off against a Weber State (10-5, 2-0) team that's coming off a 74-62 win over North Dakota. Tip against the Wildcats is slated for 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 9.
