The Bears picked up another dual win on the season, defeating the Broncos 22-15
BOISE, Idaho – The Northern Colorado Bears defeated the Boise State Broncos on Friday night, 22-15, after winning six of the ten matches.
"Tonight was a team effort," head coach Troy Nickerson said. "Our guys wrestled with great intensity and fight. We will look to build on this momentum on Sunday against a tough Oregon State team."
Keilan Torres got the night started for the Bears, defeating his opponent at 165 pounds by a 7-4 decision. Torres earned a takedown early in the match to pick up the first offensive points of the dual for the Bears, but would give up an escape just before the whistle to start the second period 2-1. Nine seconds into the second period, Torres reversed West to make it a 4-1 lead, and would tack on another takedown as well as the riding time advantage point at the end of the third to earn the win over Taylor West for the second time this season.
At 197 pounds, Trent Noon made waves, pinning Harley DiLulo in just 1:25 to add six team points to the board for the Bears. Despite taking his first committed shot of the match seven seconds in, Noon wouldn't take DiLulo down until 30 seconds later, turning him almost immediately to his back for a four-count. In a similar fashion to earlier this season [Noon won via pin at 2:21 at the Cowboy Open], Noon worked DiLulo on his back to earn the official's mat-slap, ending the match.
"Trent really got us rolling with a quick pin. He did his job, which is exactly what we expect out of a senior."
Brian Macchione picked up his second dual win in a row this evening, defeating Gaylen Edmo after a late third period takedown. With the only other points of the match coming from escapes nearing the start of the second and third periods, Macchione pulled out a takedown with just under a minute remaining in the match to secure the 3-1 win, putting the Bears up 12-6 going into intermission.
In yet another rematch on the night, Rico Montoya earned a 12-4 major decision win over Josh Newburg. After an extensive scramble in the middle of the mat, Montoya picked up a takedown and two-point nearfall two minutes into the match for an early 4-0 lead. After another takedown in the second period, Montoya escaped in the third and secured himself the win with another takedown and nearfall to make it 11-1. Despite giving up a takedown and escape in the third, Montoya had riding time locked up, finishing the match up by an eight to give the Bears another four team points.
Benjamin Polkowske made his 2015-16 dual debut, wrestling Jake Velarde in a close match. Polkowske's first point of the match came seven seconds into the second period – an escape after opting for a down-position start. Velarde also opted for the bottom start going into the third, but Polkowske rode him out the entire period, notching over a minute of riding time for another point to secure his 2-0 win, moving the Bear lead to 19-9 going into the final two matches of the night.
After a pin for Boise State at 149 pounds, it was up to Eleazar De Luca to win the dual for the Bears, and he did just that. Despite being down 2-1 after three minutes of wrestling, De Luca managed a two-point nearfall (after starting the second period on top) before giving up an escape, leaving the match tied 3-3 going into the final period. An escape for De Luca would make it 4-3, a lead he would hold on to the rest of the match, earning the decision win and securing the dual win for UNC, 22-15.
"Ben Polkowske did a nice job in his first match back at 141 pounds. He was able to ride his opponent the entire third period for the win. Eleazar sealed the night two matches later with a hard fought win over a tough opponent."
The Bears are back in action this Sunday, Jan. 31 at 3:00 p.m. MT for a matchup against the Oregon State Beavers in Corvallis, Oregon.
