Morgan Grabs D1 Program Record, 18 rebounds in @unco_mbb Win
1/23/2016 6:18:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Junior forward, Tanner Morgan had a day, hauling in a career-best and UNC Division I program record, 18 rebounds in the team's 84-79 win at Northern Arizona on Saturday.
Flagstaff, Ariz. – Northern Colorado (7-13, 4-4 Big Sky) picked up the Big Sky road sweep after defeating Northern Arizona (4-15, 1-6 Big Sky) 84-79 on Saturday afternoon. It's the first time since the 2012-13 season that the Bears earned back-to-back conference wins away from Greeley.
Northern Colorado was once again dominant on the glass, outrebounding the Lumberjacks 48-26. Junior forward, Tanner Morgan was a monster down low, grabbing a UNC Division I record, 18 rebounds. Morgan's final stat line read, seven points, 18 rebounds, one block and one steal.
UNC was paced by junior guard, Jordan Wilson who scored 20 points in the victory. It's the second time in as many games that Wilson reached the 20-point mark. He finished the game 5-of-8 (62.5%) from the field, including 4-of-6 (66.7%) from beyond the arc.
Freshman guard, Jordan Davis wasn't far behind, pouring in 17 points of his own. Junior guard, Anthony Johnson was the third Bear to end in double figures with 12 points.
"I don't know what's gotten into us on this road trip – we've rebounded the ball extremely well and obviously Tanner [Morgan] was the guy today, but with Ibrahim [Sylla] to get to seven (rebounds) in fifteen minutes of playing time to me is the difference," head coach B.J. Hill said. "To beat somebody on the boards by twenty two is going to give you a lot of opportunities and that was the difference."
The Bears jumped out to an early 7-3 lead, but an 8-0 run by the Jacks after a Wilson three-ball gave NAU the advantage (14-10) just five minutes into the game.
The game was evenly played for the next 15 minutes, featuring five different lead changes, but a jumper from Morgan and a layup by Davis gave the Bears a 35-31 edge going into the half.
"We have to get better with our end-of-game scenarios, but I talked about this a month ago and told them (the players) we can't work on those situations because quite frankly we're not good enough, the games aren't close enough," Hill added. "I told them when they do their part and start getting us in those situations, then I'll take the heat for end of the game stuff, so I'm going to take complete blame for the way we responded to some pressure situations down the stretch."
UNC never trailed in the final 20 minutes of regulation, but also never led by more than nine points.
A make from downtown by Johnson pushed Northern Colorado's lead to nine (69-60) with 5:21 remaining, but Northern Arizona refused to go away.
In the final minutes of the game the Lumberjacks rallied for seven unanswered points off of two Bear turnovers and cut the lead to just two (81-79) with 25 seconds to play.
Northern Colorado knocked down five out of its last six free throws courtesy of Anglin and Wilson as NAU failed to convert on the offensive end, wrapping up the team's third straight victory and moving them back to .500 in league play at 4-4.
"Jordan Davis has gotten so much better at the line from what he was even two, three weeks ago," Hill stated. "Obviously Dallas [Anglin] and Jordan Wilson were big time, but to go 24-of-30 – that's the team that was here for the first eleven, twelve games of the year and then we had a couple of games where we just lost it on the road in terms of our free throw shooting."
UNC shot 60.0% (15-of-25) in the second half en route to a 45.8% (27-of-59) night from the floor. The team finished 37.5% (6-of-16) from three point range. They also made it count from the free throw line converting 24-of-30 (80.0%) shots, the second game in a row UNC has shot 80.0% or better from the charity stripe.
Northern Colorado is back at Bank of Colorado Arena for its next three games, beginning with North Dakota on Saturday, Jan. 30. Tip against the Fighting Hawks is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
