The Bears fell to the Jackrabbits Friday night, 34-3
GREELEY, Colo. - The Northern Colorado Bears fell 34-3 against the South Dakota State Jackrabbits on Friday evening in their home opener dual.
"We definitely left some matches on the table," head coach Troy Nickerson said. "SDSU is a tough team that wrestles hard - we knew that from last year. We knew we were going to have to fight to win tonight and we just didn't do what we needed to."
The Bears would win only one match on Friday evening, a 16-12 decision win for Timmy Box over SDSU's Alex Kocer. Box took a 6-2 lead late in the first period after reversing his opponent onto his back and tacking on four nearfall points before time expired. In similar fashion, a takedown and nearfall in the second period would make it 12-5 before heading into the third period.
The final 2:00 of the match resulted in a flurry of points, including a scramble that gave Box a reversal and two nearfall before an almost immediate reversal for Kocer. The 16-12 final would put three team points up on the board for the Bears. Box is now 21-9 on the season overall, and 2-2 in dual matches.Â
The remaining nine matches of the dual came with losses for the UNC squad, including decision losses at 133, 157, 165 and 197 pounds, as well as a tiebreaker-2 decision loss at heavyweight. The Bears also gave up bonus points in three matches, all by technical fall.
The Bears remain at home for another dual this Sunday, Jan. 17, against the North Dakota State Bisons. Matches are scheduled to start at 2:00 PM MT.
