The Bears fell to the Bison, 29-13 on Sunday in second home dual of the year
GREELEY, Colo. – In their second home dual of the season, the Northern Colorado Bears fell to the North Dakota State Bison, 29-13.
The Bears picked up wins in four of the 10 weights, including at 133, 141, 149 and 197 pounds.
"Today was not our best by a longshot," head coach Troy Nickerson said. "I think this weekend proved that we still have a lot of work to do and we'll be right back in the room on Monday and get grinding."
At 133 pounds, true freshman Rico Montoya earned a 15-9 decision win over Nico Colunga. After closing out the first period tied 4-4 and then trailing 6-7 at the end of the second period, Montoya managed two takedowns and nearfall in the third, as well as securing a riding time point, to win the match by a six point advantage.
Immediately following Montoya's win, Colton Orrino (141 pounds) picked up his first dual win of the season. After scoring two takedowns in the second period to go up 4-2, Orrino tacked on two escapes and two more takedowns for the 10-5 decision win over Tommy Walton. This was only Orrino's second start of the year, losing by major decision (9-1) on Friday evening against Seth Gross of SDSU.
Timmy Box, the lone Bear to win a match on Friday against SDSU, earned the third-straight win on the afternoon, locking up a decision win over NDSU's Clay Ream. Box went up 4-1 early, taking Ream down twice in the first period before choosing neutral to start the second period. A reversal for Box would make it 6-4 going into the third, but Box added another takedown and gained the riding time advantage point to close it up, 9-6.
"Timmy Box is really starting to come into his true form and that's something we've been looking for him to do for a long time. This weekend he won two matches to guys who had beaten him in the past and he's starting to make those jumps to the next level."
The final UNC win of the night came at 197 pounds, when redshirt senior Trent Noon returned to the mat fighting hard following a 9-5 loss on Friday evening, earning a major decision over Logan Paxton (NDSU). Noon grabbed the only points in the first period with a takedown, another takedown and a four-point nearfall in the second period made it 8-0 in Noon's favor. Noon chose the bottom position to start the second and after escaping in four seconds, made it 9-0.
Another takedown with less than a minute remaining, plus the riding time advantage point, would make the final a 14-1 major decision for Noon, putting the only bonus points on the board for the Bears of the evening.
Of their six losses, the Bears kept two to decision, including a sudden victory-2 decision loss at 157 and a 3-1 loss at 174. The UNC squad gave up bonus points in the remaining four, one by technical fall and three via pin.
Northern Colorado returns to the mat next Friday evening in a non-conference matchup against the Cal Poly Mustangs, scheduled for a 7 p.m. MT start. Prior to the UNC dual, the Bears will host the USA Wrestling-based Jack Pinto Cup, starting at4:30 p.m. The Jack Pinto Cup will be a dual format competition between USA and International Greco-Roman wrestlers (USA vs. The World).
