FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Northern Colorado men's golf team wrapped up play the 2015 Ram Masters Invite on Tuesday.
The team started off with a solid morning round on Monday finishing in fifth place after the first 18 holes, but had a minor setback in the afternoon round, shooting 20 strokes higher to end the day.
The Bears finished the final 54-hole stretch with a team score of 297, a 15-stroke improvement from the second round.
Overall, the team ended the invite with an 899 (291, 311, 297) and took 13th place.
"We never could get comfortable with the firm and fast conditions of the course," head coach Roger Prenzlow said. "The guys fought hard, but after the first round we never found a rhythm and made a run of birdies and pars. Again, we had too many bogies or worse today."
Both seniors Steven Kupcho and Conner Barr finished 35th overall.
Heading into Tuesday, Barr was 13 spots up on the leaderboard over Kupcho.
Kupcho produced a final round of 72 (+2), while Barr ended the day with a 75 (+3), shortening the gap and tying the two teammates at +12 over for the tournament.
Junior Julian Woodfork had the second best round for the Bears, and a personal best of the Invite, signing off on a 73 (+3). Though Woodfork registered six bogeys on the day, he did damage control holing three birdies to finish +3 over.
Woodfork claimed 58th place shooting +17 over after 54 holes.
Just one stroke behind Woodfork was newcomer Josh Matz. Matz improved two strokes from his second round score, tallying a 77 (+7), completing the meet at +18 over par for 62nd place overall.
Sophomore Sam Marley completed the five-man team. Marly, who had the roughest afternoon round of anyone on the team on Monday scoring an 85 (+15), came back and knocked off seven strokes in the final 18 to shoot a 78 (+8).
He was +22 over for the two-day tournament and finished 82nd.
"Julian, Steven, and Conner were close to having a nice tournament," Prenzlow added. "Like I told the guys, we cannot dwell on this event, but must learn and grow from it. We are already looking forward to the CU event next week in Boulder."
The men's golf team will be back in action Sept. 28-29 at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invite, hosted by the University of Colorado.
