Northern Colorado volleyball hosts Western Michigan on Friday for its home opener before hosting Arizona State and traveling to CSU
GREELEY, Colo--Â Northern Colorado volleyball opens its home slate this weekend with a pair of 2014 NCAA Tournament teams in Western Michigan and #15 Arizona State. The Bears will follow those two matches up with a showdown at in-state rival Colorado State in Fort Collins.Â
UNC comes into home opener weekend after going 1-2 at the UCF Invitational to open the season in Orlando, Florida. The Bears dropped their first two matches of the season, before earning the first win of the season in a five set thriller against Delaware.Â
Senior outside hitter Kendra Cunningham (Eaton, Colo.) had herself a heck of an opening weekend recording 57 kills and 32 digs while being a key leader for the team. 25 of Cunningham's 57 kills came against Delaware and set a new career high for her.
Cunningham was not the only Bear to have a good opening weekend, sophomore middle blocker Alex Kloehn (Corona, Calif.) and freshman outside hitter Kortney Lockey (Eaton, Colo.) each had solid offensive weekends as well. Kloehn was the teams second leading kills leader with 20, while also recording 11 total blocks. Meanwhile Lockey provided a spark off the bench for UNC in its vicory over Delaware with 11 kills off the bench.Â
The Bears challenging non-conference schedule continues this weekend when Western Michigan and Arizona State visit Bank of Colorado Arena. It will be ther first time in the program's history facing Western Michigan, while UNC is seeking its first ever win over Arizona State. The Bears and Sun Devils have met three other times, most recently in 1978, with ASU coming up the victors all three.
When the Bears travel to Fort Collins on Tuesday, UNC will be looking to snap a 13 match losing streak to the Rams. Northern Colorado has not defeated CSU since 1982, and have won only once in Fort Collins, back in 1979.Â
