LINCOLN, Neb. – The cross country team competed in its second meet of the season heading to Nebraska to run in the Woody Greeno Invitational.
Last season the women's squad bolted to a third place finish, this season was even better as the young-core captured a second place finish, just behind Creighton who won the women's 6k race in the Division I category.
"Both teams took a big step forward from two weeks ago," said cross country coach Trent Mack. "I think they are starting to get more familiar and comfortable training together and we are now seeing that carry over into the race."
UNC saw four runners take Top 35 honors in the 200-member field, in Erin Thomas, Alicia Thompson, Caroline Braun, and Cammy Sargent.
Thomas, a freshman, paced the team, coming in ninth place with a time of 22:48.1, a personal best of her young collegiate career. She averaged a 6:09 minute mile.
Fellow freshman, Thompson, was right behind Thomas finishing 11th overall, crossing the finish line in 22:58.5. This was also a career-best for Thompson.
Senior Caroline Braun also ran her way into the Top 15, taking 14th, clocking in at 23:03.0, besting her final time at the meet from last season by over a minute.
Another newcomer to UNC, Cammy Sargent rounded out the high placers, notching a 23rd place, posting a time of 23:19.1.
Cami Kennedy was the fifth official time for the Bears; she ran the 6k in 23.49.4 good for 23rd.
Other times for the women's team included McKayla Gray with a 23:49.6 (24th), Katy East finished with a 23:57.9 (27th), Carly Browning ran a 24:47.1 (27th), and Sally Filatova completed the race in 25:13.5 (100th).
"The teams executed the race plan much better this week," Mack added. "They were much more patient early and found themselves moving up a lot mid race. The freshman on both sides showed great discipline in running their first ever 6k and 8k races."
On the men's side, the team claimed 6th place and was led by freshman Tristan Irish in the 8k race.
Irish finished with a time of 27:31.7, averaging 5:32 minute mile and claiming 93rd on the leaderboard.
Nick Bailey, another freshman on the team, gutted out a 27:45.5 overall time, coming in 109th in the 233-man field.
Keaton Duncan was in the middle of the pack, crossing the end line in 27:54.6, to take 116th overall.
Junior veteran Kingston Wagner bested his time from last year by 40 seconds, with a 28:10.2, good for 125th.
Fellow junior, Timothy Corrie wasn't far off of Wagner's mark, ending with a time of 28:32.0, also beating his 2014 time at the meet by over 40 seconds. He placed 137th and was the final official time for the Bears.
Other times for the men's team included Lucas Mielke with 29.20.5 (171st), Jacob Higa ran a 29:51.1 (184th), and Ryan Faulkner rounded out the team with a 29.58.4 (186th).
The cross country team makes a quick trip south for their next meet, heading to the Rocky Mountain Shootout hosted by the University of Colorado on Oct. 3.
"I feel we can continue to move forward with the experience of our upperclassmen having a big effect as the season extends into the fall," Mack said.
