AKRON, Ohio. – Northern Colorado sent 11 student-athletes to the USA Wrestling University Nationals that got underway on Friday. The tournament features two styles of wrestling, Greco-Roman and Freestyle.
Sophomore Trey Andrews participated in the Greco-Roman event, while the other 10 will participate in the Freestyle competition on Saturday and Sunday.
Greco-Roman differs greatly from collegiate style wrestling because it forbids holds below the waist. This restriction results in an emphasis on throws because a wrestler cannot use trips to take an opponent to the ground, or avoid throws by hooking or grabbing the opponent's leg.
Andrews snagged a second place finish going 3-1 on the day in the 59 kilogram bracket. Andrews cruised through his first two matches by decision and tech fall, downing Ruben Navejas 12-7, and then held Kyle Robison scoreless, winning 9-0.
"Trey wrestled extremely well today," said head coach Troy Nickerson. "A few minor adjustments and he would have won his first Greco-Roman title. He has made great strides this spring and has become a better all-around wrestler. He's been dedicated throughout the offseason and I look forward to getting him back on the mat next fall."
Andrews kept the momentum going in the semifinals beating Dalton Roberts by decision, 10-4.
In the finals the sophomore squared off against Aaron Kalil and the match ended in a draw, 2-2, but because Kalil scored the last point before the end of the bout, he was awarded the victory.
The second place finish ties Andrews' best showing in the Greco-Roman University Nationals tournament. In 2013 he also placed second at the event.
Andrews' efforts earned him University Nationals All-American status.
The tournament continues tomorrow, May 30 with the freestyle competition.
