[ROUND ONE RESULTS]
ANGELS CAMP, Calif. – The Northern Colorado men's golf team competed in the opening round of the 2015 Big Sky Men's Golf Championship on Monday at the Greenhorn Golf Resort. The Bears currently have two players in the Top 20 and are sitting in sixth as a team after shooting at 312 (+24 overall).
"The guys competed hard today," said head coach Roger Prenzlow. "We just hit some critical shots poorly and it cost us a ton of strokes."
Junior Conner Barr leads UNC after an exciting first day. Barr made a hole-in-one on the par 3, 13th. He also carded 11 pars to go along with the ace.
Barr bogeyed the first hole, but came back to make six straight pars before holing back-to-back bogeys to go into the turn at +3 over.
The junior's hole-in-one was able to erase two of his three bogeys on the back nine to finish the last stretch at +1 over and +4 (76) over for the day.
After 18 holes, Barr is in a tie for 12th place.
"Conner really played a solid round," Prenzlow added. "A hole-in-one is always exciting and a great way to build his confidence over the next two days."
Freshman Sam Marley had a surprise showing in round one. The UNC newcomer finished just one stroke back of Barr at +5 over (77) for the day.
Marley's best nine holes came on the back, tallying three birdies and four pars on his way to a -1 under finish. If not for a double-bogey on the front nine, Marley would be sitting at +3 over for the tournament.
Marley is in a four-way tie for 16th.
"Sam turned things around and played a great back nine," Prenzlow said. "It was nice to see him correct his mistakes and play good golf over his last nine holes."
Coming into the clubhouse just one stroke off of Marley was sophomore Julian Woodfork. Woodfork notched a +6 over, 78 on Monday.
The California native had 12 pars and a lone birdie throughout his 18 holes of play. Two minor mistakes on holes 4 and 10 cost him double bogeys, but other than that his day was solid.
Woodfork is just outside the Top 20, sitting in a tie for 21st overall.
Freshman Andrew Romano and sophomore Jack Cummings capped off Northern Colorado's first round.
Romano recorded a +9 over, 81, while Cummings was just one stroke behind with a +10 over, 82.
Romano had a strong round that included 12 pars, but also stroked three double bogeys.
Cummings' day was a bit erratic, as he tied for the team-high in birdies with three on the day, but also had two double bogeys and a triple bogey to follow it up.
Romano is perched in a tie for 29th, while Cummings is tied for 30th.
