FINAL RESULTS
SIMI VALLEY, Calif. – The Northern Colorado men's golf team wrapped up its fall season with the final round of the Bill Cullum Invitational on Tuesday.
The Bears sat in 13th heading into the finale at the Wood Ranch Golf Club, and moved up one spot in the standings to capture 12th place as a team at the invite. The squad put together a final score of 881 (296-294-291) with three consecutive sub-300 rounds.
"Josh [Matz] had a wonderful event. Finishing tied for fourth in this field is a real accomplishment," said head coach Roger Prenzlow. "He was a pleasure to watch the entire event. It was great to see Steven [Kupcho] have a stellar round and also to have Sam [Marley] play well."
UNC was led by freshman Josh Matz throughout all 54 holes of the tournament. Matz capped off his excellent play with another 71 (-1), finishing in a tie for 4th place overall.
This was Matz's best finish at any tournament this fall, and the best of his young collegiate career.
He ended the two-day meet with a 211 (-5 overall) after posting a 71 (-1) and a 69 (-3) on Monday's 36-hole extravaganza.
Â
The California native sealed the top finish with 13 pars and three birdies in his final 18 holes.
Senior Steven Kupcho also had a fall-best performance. Kupcho shot a 67 (-5) missing out on his career-low by a stroke. Kupcho was nine shots back of Matz, ending with a 220 (78-75-67). He finished in a tie for 38th place on the leaderboard.
The third best round of the day came from sophomore Sam Marley. Marley duplicated his first round total of 73 (+1) and totaled a 223 (73-77-73) at the invite, good for 48th place.
Both senior Conner Barr and junior Jack Cummings fired identical rounds of 80 (+8) to round of the team. Barr strung together a 231 (74-77-80), while Cummings was just one stroke back with a 232 (79-73-80).
"We need to keep making strides to play well for 54 holes," Prenzlow added. "We are playing well in spurts, but have a few lapses which cost us in the final standings. We have a ton of talent on this team, but need to focus better the entire tournament."
Loyola Marymount won the team title after scoring an 842 (-22 overall). Southern Utah's Fidel Concepcion took first place individually, posting a -9 under at the meet.
That completes the fall season for Northern Colorado. They will take the winter off and be back to open up the spring season on Feb. 8 in Cedar City, Utah at the Thunderbird Invitational.
