Lockey Has Career Night in @UNCBearsVB Loss

Kortney Lockey had a career night during UNC's match at Sacramento State Thursday night
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Northern Colorado (7-13, 3-4 Big Sky) volleyball started off its tough home-road split on Thursday night in Sacramento, California taking on the Sacramento State Hornets (17-5, 4-3 Big Sky). Sac. St. would defeat the Bears in four sets 22-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-10.
"We have to be better prepared for tonight's match and that is on me for not getting us ready for it," head coach Lyndsey Oates said. "We just have to be tougher throughout the match. That is a sign of a true competitor and we are just not there as a group yet."
Freshman Kortney Lockey had a career night in the loss, with a team high 15 kills along with three total blocks. The kills are a new career high passing her previous of 11 against Delaware earlier this year and the three blocks tie a high just set in UNC's previous match against Weber State. Lockey also finished second on the team in hitting going .351 during the match.
Kendra Cunningham had a good night recording her ninth double-double of the season and also achieving a career milestone of recording her 1,000th career kill. She finished second on the team in both kills (13) and digs (14). Her 1,000th career kill came in the third set, making her the 17th player in program history to record that many kills.
Cunningham did lead the Bears in blocks during the match with four.
Middle blocker Emily O'Neil also had herself a solid match, hitting a team-leading .545 with seven kills and just one attack error. She also chipped in three total blocks for UNC.
Northern Colorado got out to a slow start to the match when Sacramento State won the first five points. The Bears responded though, taking 19 of the next 26 points in the set to go up 19-12 and never relinquishing the lead during it.
During that first set UNC out-hit Sac. St. .280-.227, but after that the Hornets out-hit the Bears and didn't dip below .300 for the rest of the match. Overall, Sacramento State
bested Northern Colorado in hitting .320-206.
By hitting above .300 in the next three sets and holding UNC below that mark, Sacramento State was able to take all three sets and the match.
"We will bounce back from this and get ready for North Dakota on Saturday," Oates said about her team's upcoming schedule.
Northern Colorado comes home to close out the weekend with a homecoming date against North Dakota inside Bank of Colorado Arena at 7:00 p.m.
