GREELEY – A busy summer for Trey Andrews has just gotten even busier.
Northern Colorado's redshirt freshman 125-pounder has been selected by USA Wrestling as a representative of the United States at next month's Junior Pan American Wrestling Championships in Toronto.
"I am honored to be going to compete in such a prestigious tournament, and I am going to do everything in my power to represent my home town, my college and my country," Andrews said.
Andrews, from Safford, Ariz., will wrestle in the 55-kilogram division, or at about 121 pounds, in both styles of Olympic wrestling — Greco-Roman and freestyle.
The championships will be held June 27-29 at the Hershey Centre.
This selection comes on the heels of Andrews' performance at the FILA Junior National Championships in Las Vegas in April where he placed fifth in freestyle and second in Greco-Roman.
In the Greco-Roman bracket, Andrews went 2-1 with two technical falls before losing in the championship match. In the freestyle bracket, Andrews went 6-2 with three technical falls and two pins.
Andrews concluded his first year in competition for the Bears this season with the second-best record on the team at 23-8. He won by pin five times and placed fourth at 125 pounds at the Western Wrestling Conference Tournament in March.
