Bakersfield, Calif.- The Northern Colorado wrestling team fell just short of the sweep of their competition during the California Road Trip. The Bears took on CSU-Bakersfield Saturday in a dual coming up short by a score of 28-15.
Despite starting the meet with two wins, UNC could only muster two wins the rest of the evening.
"Today we were beat by a tough Bakersfield team," said head coach Troy Nickerson. "Overall, I feel we will get better."
Brian Macchione and Trey Andrews opened up the dual with a pair of victories at HWT and 125-lbs, defeating the Runners Alex Encarnarcion-Strand, 4-3, and Sergio Mendez, 14-10, respectively.
Trent Noon followed suit picking up a win over Runners wrestler Sean Pollock by a score of 12-11.
The Bears got their only pin of the meet by Mitchell Polkowske who continues to have a dominating year. Polkowske took on David Meza in the match and worked his way to a quick pin in 2:13.
"Mitchell is a man on a mission this year," said Nickerson. "His aggressive style is tough to match by any of his opponents. I look forward to him getting even better."
UNC dropped two close matches on the evening with Nick Adams at 124-lbs losing 6-2 against Coleman Hammond and Beau Roberts dropping his 157-lbs match to Spencer Hill, 9-5.
The Bears take some time off before they head to Las Vegas, Nevada for the Cliff Keen Invitational. The Cliff Keen Invite is one of the top wrestling opens in the country and the Bears will look to put their name at the top of some weight classes.
"Over the next two weeks we will work on the technical areas before heading to Vegas," said Nickerson.
