GREELEY, Colo.- The Northern Colorado women's soccer team lost a heart breaker on Sunday losing, 1-0 in the second overtime period to Northern Arizona. UNC moves to 3-2 in Big Sky play and 8-6-1 on the season.
"Unfortunately it was a tough loss for the team losing with thirty seconds left to play." Said head coach Tim Barrera. "We have to move on from this and look to get two wins at home next weekend."
The first half started off evenly for both teams, who would fire off 6 shots, 2 on-goal and both had a corner apiece. With a strong wind from the North, it added a different twist to the match, forcing both teams to make short passes and less crosses. Junior defender,Adrienne Jordanled the team with two shots going into half, while Emily Wadell also had two shots for NAU.
The second half would be much of the same, but both teams would eventually adjust and began to apply more pressure. NAU attempted to strike first in the 60thminute, when Cierra Gamble just missed her shot high bouncing off the cross bar. She received the ball off the rebound and fired another shot off, but sophomore goalkeeper, Katlin Ruff made a great diving save to keep the match knotted at, 0-0.
Northern Colorado added some pressure of their own in 71st minute, when senior forward,Juliana Groverput a nice ball on frame, only to be blocked by an outstretched keeper. Grover ended with five shots on the day and three on-goal. Two minutes later in the 73rdminute,Brooke Bradenalmost landed her second goal of the season, but again was saved by the keeper forcing the match into overtime.
In the first overtime the Bears controlled the majority of the period. Six UNC players put shots on-goal, with two being tipped over the cross bar. Northern Colorado also earned three corners kicks in the period, when only having one in the first two halves of the match. The Bears were unable to capitalize on the corner kicks, sending the match to a second overtime.
In the second overtime the weather changed, adding rain along with the high winds. Both teams had plenty of opportunities, with UNC firing off four shots to NAU's three shots. The clock wound down and NAU made one last push with one minute remaining in the match. Demi Schmieder fed Haley Wingender a nice ball to left side of the box. Wingender would put a very slippery ball, skipping off the ground towards Ruff who couldn't get a solid handle on it, giving NAU the game-winning goal over the Bears.
The women's soccer team will look to get back on track when they host Portland State next Friday, Oct. 17 at 7:00 p.m.
