Two Wrestlers Finish In Top Eight At Cliff Keen

PRIMM, Nev. - Junior Justin Gaethje (157 pounds) won seven-straight bouts en route to a fourth-place finish at the prestigious Cliff Keen Invitational, defeating two top-ten ranked wrestlers on the way to lead Northern Colorado over the weekend. The Bears finished in 22nd place with a total of 33 points in the tournament.
Ohio State (122.5) won the tournament, while Cornell (121.5) finished second and Oklahoma (109.5) was third.
Gaethje dropped his first bout to top-ranked Jordan Burroughs from Nebraska, but rebounded to win the next seven, including back-to-back wins in the consolation semifinals and finals over No. 9 Colton Salazar from Purdue (9-7) and No. 2 Chase Pami from Cal Poly (11-4). In the third-place bout, he lost an 8-0 major decision to No. 15 Jesse Dong of Virginia Tech.
Senior Kenny Hashimoto, who was ranked 16th this week by InterMat Wrestle, finished in eighth place with a mark of 3-2. He won his two first bouts before running up against top-ranked Reece Humphrey of Ohio State and losing 15-6. In the consolation semifinals he dropped an 11-4 decision against 15th-ranked Zack Bailey of Oklahoma.
Senior Tony Mustari posted a 3-2 record, while freshman Justin Gonzales went 2-2. Both Brandon Kammerzell and Eric Brennan went 1-2 at the 28th annual tournament, while sophomore Tanner Weiks, junior Ed Matthews and senior Justin Tuell each went 0-2.
The Bears host Ohio in a dual on Dec. 9 in Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion at 7:00 p.m. and then host No. 4 Minnesota on the 10th at 3:00 p.m.
