Tanya Vassar comes to UNC fresh off finishing her master’s degree in Exercise Science at Adams State University in Alamosa. At Adams State, she was the track and field graduate assistant for the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons. Coaching the men’s and women’s sprints, jumps, hurdles, multi-events and relays in conjunction with Brandon Campbell, Vassar tallied 21 All-American athletes in her two years between the indoor and outdoor seasons. Her coaching contributions helped the Adams State men’s team to an outdoor national championship title in 2012. Vassar accumulated a total of 6 national champion student-athletes during her time at Adams State. At the conference level, Vassar’s coaching contributions helped to seal conference titles for both the men’s and women’s teams for indoors and outdoors in 2012 and 2013.
Prior to UNC and Adams State, Vassar competed in the pentathlon (indoors) and heptathlon (outdoors), as well as pole vaulted and ran on the relays at Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D. As a student-athlete with the Wolves, she qualified for the NCAA Division II National Championships in the pentathlon and held the school records in both the indoor and outdoor pole vault events. In 2011, she earned her bachelor’s degree in Human Performance with an emphasis in Strength & Conditioning, received a minor in Coaching and graduated with a 4.0 GPA.
