Houston Reed is entering his sixth season as an assistant coach for the University of Northern Colorado. Reed brings fourteen years of college head coaching experience and spent three years as a high school head coach in Colorado, totaling 23 years of successful coaching. In May of 2022, Reed was promoted to Assistant Head Coach/Recruiting Coordinator. In the two years span the Bears have compiled a 44-24 overall record, and 27-9 record in Big Sky Conference play.
Reed has worked with UNC post players over the past five seasons, helping Kur Jongkuch, Theo Hughes, and Brock Wisne shoot over 60% from the floor each season. Jongkuch and Hughes are currently fulfilling professional contracts. Reed also fulfills the role of recruiting coordinator for the staff, coordinating campus visits and assists the staff in organizing their recruiting needs. Reed has recruited the state of Colorado for twenty years.
Since Reed has been on staff, the Bears have competed in the Big Sky tournament championship game in 2021-22 and 2024-25 seasons. The Bears have also competed twice in the CBI post season tournament advancing to the semifinals in 2021-22. He also was helped the Bears advance to the NIT tournament for the first time in school history and the 2024-25 Big Sky regular season championship in 2024-25 season.
Reed came to UNC from Chadron State in Nebraska where he was the head coach for four years. While at Chadron, Reed coached four All-RMAC players and in 2018-19 led the Eagles to at 12-16, including winning 10 RMAC games for the first time in seven years.
Reed coached for 10 years at Otero Junior College in La Junta, Colorado before arriving at Chadron State. Over his final five years at Otero, the Rattlers won the NJCAA Region IX Tournament in 2012 and appeared in the title game in 2013. Reed was the Region IX Coach of the Year in 2012 and 2016. The 2012 title gave OJC their first-ever NJCAA national tournament appearance where they advanced to the NJCAA Elite Eight. While at Otero, Reed coached 29 academic all-region and 12 academic All-American players. Four of his teams finished in the top 20 nationally for team grade point average. Reed was head boys' basketball coach at Rocky Ford High School in Colorado, where he took a winless team to the Colorado 2A Sweet 16 in only two seasons.
As a player from 1997-2002, Reed first starred at OJC, where he holds the single-game scoring record (46). Following his graduation from Otero, he played for two seasons at Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota under legendary coach Don Meyer, where he became teammates with head coach Steve Smiley. The Wolves won their first NSIC conference title under Don Meyer his senior season and Reed was twice named as an NSU scholar athlete.
Joining Reed in Greeley are his wife Leah of 24 years, daughter Olivia (22) and son Johnnie (20).
