Marty English rejoined the coaching staff as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach in 2018. English, a 30-year plus veteran of the coaching ranks, joins the staff after spending the past two seasons at Colorado State as its defensive coordinator.
In his first year back at UNC, English helped the Bears become the fourth best red zone defense in the Big Sky. Three Bear defenders earned all-conference honors during the 2018 season in Keifer Morris, Henry Stelzner and Sherand Boyd Jr. Morris was named to the third team All-Big Sky, while Stelzner and Boyd Jr were honorable mentions. Linebacker Luke Nelson also earned CoSIDA first team Academic All-District member.
English is in his second tenure with Northern Colorado, having started his coaching career at his alma mater as a graduate assistant in 1987 and coaching in Greeley for 16 years including three as the defensive coordinator from 2000-02. English played for the Bears from 1982-85, earning All-North Central Conference honors at linebacker his senior season.
English, a second-generation coach, is well known by Colorado high school coaches as one of the most genuine and effective recruiters of in-state talent. On top of coaching at UNC and CSU, English also coached at Wyoming from 2003-11, serving as defensive and special team's coordinator from 2009-11. He has helped develop numerous current and former NFL players including Reed Doughty, Aaron Smith, Shaq Barret and Cory James.
A 1986 and 1989 graduate of Northern Colorado, English owns a bachelor’s degree in recreation management, and a master’s in physical education in 1989. He grew up in Lakewood, Colo., and earned all-state honors at Alameda High School.
Marty and his wife, Suzie, have one daughter, Kelsey, and one son, Tyler. Kelsey is a graduate of the University of Wyoming, while Tyler is a graduate of Mesa State College in Grand Junction, Colo. Each was married in the summer of 2017.
