2016: Reliable second runningback for the Bears in his redshirt junior season. Split time on carries with Riek and averaged 44 yards per game for a total of 474 yards on 78 attempts. Led all running backs with 5 touchdowns. He averaged 5.6 yards per carry.
2015: Continued to be a staple in the backfield for the Bears in his redshirt sophomore season... Finished second on the team in rushing with 259 yards and 3 TDs... Rushed for a career-best 112 yards in the win over UC Davis on 10/17/15... His season-long rush was 57 yards also came against the Aggies... Played in 10 of the 11 games for the Bears and received 52 rushing attempts.
2014: Worked his way into the backfield playing in 10Â out of the 11 games...Rushed for 145 on just 16 attempts, giving him an 8.5 yards per carry average... Scored one TD and longest rush of 49Â yards came at Eastern Washington where he also scored his lone rushing TD of the year... Season-high six touches came at home against Idaho State on Oct. 25...Â
2013: Redshirted.
High School: Earned a total of seven letters at Vista Ridge, getting four in football and three in track & field... As a junior on the gridiron he was a First-Team All-Conference selection as an all-purpose player, as well as a First-Team All-Area pick at returner... In his senior year, earned the Pikes Peal League MVP in addition to First-Team All-Conference and All-Area honors as a running back... On the track, finished second in the 200 meters and third in the 100 meters at the state meet... In 2012, rushed for 1,582 yards and 22 touchdowns... Also earned an honorable mention on the Academic All-State team.
Personal: Is the only child of Joette and Guillermo Cartagena... Born August 2 in Colorado Springs... Is pursuing a degree in business.
