Bears Come Up Short Against Weber State

GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado built a halftime lead and pushed its advantage to seven early in the second half, but Weber State used a key surge after the break to hand the Bears a 76-71 setback Saturday night in Big Sky play at Bank of Colorado Arena.
Weber State (9-8, 3-1 Big Sky) grabbed its largest lead of the night midway through the first half, going up 23-12 at the 9:42 mark, before Northern Colorado (11-6, 1-3 Big Sky) answered with a strong close to the period. The Bears finished the half on a 25-11 push, taking a 37-34 advantage into the locker room.
Northern Colorado continued to build on that momentum coming out of halftime, stretching its lead to seven, 46-39, with 14:28 left behind inside scoring and trips to the line. Weber State responded by turning defense into offense down the stretch, edging back in front at the 6:13 mark and holding the lead the rest of the way.
The Bears stayed within a possession late, cutting it to 68-67 with 1:01 to play, but Weber State sealed the game at the free-throw line, scoring the final four points in the final five seconds.
Brock Wisne and Quinn Denker led Northern Colorado with 17 points apiece, with Wisne adding seven rebounds and Denker dishing out six assists. Ring Nyeri added 16 points and eight boards as the Bears scored 50 points in the paint.
Edwin Suarez Jr. paced Weber State with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Tijan Saine Jr. added 17 points and went 10-for-11 at the stripe. Nigel Burris chipped in 11 points.
Weber State finished 23-of-33 at the line and outscored Northern Colorado 16-10 in points off turnovers, including a 13-4 edge in the second half. The Bears shot 45.8 percent from the floor, but went 1-for-14 from three-point range.
UP NEXT: The Bears hit the road again for a pair of Big Sky games, playing at Portland State on Thursday and Sacramento State on Saturday. Both games are scheduled for 8 p.m. MST.
