Bears Set for Third Straight Road Test at Houston Christian

GREELEY, Colo. – After two straight near-miss finishes, Northern Colorado football is turning the page and preparing for its third consecutive road game, this time against an athletic Houston Christian squad.
Head coach Ed Lamb met with the media Wednesday to reflect on his team's response after a tough overtime loss and to preview the challenge awaiting in Houston.
On moving forward after South Dakota…
"I think we're in a difficult spot right now as a team mentally," Lamb said. "But our on-field focus and intensity yesterday gives me great hope that we're intent on the next opponent. We've been as close as we could be to winning two games in a row and not come out with victories. That's a real test. What I hear from the guys is a hunger to get better in the areas where we've fallen short."
On areas of improvement…
"We need to do a better job of stopping the run on defense and a better job of running the ball on offense," Lamb noted. "That doesn't mean we can't be a pass-first team, we've shown encouraging signs in the passing game. But championships aren't won being one-dimensional. We've got to find balance, and short-yardage rushing situations are a key point of emphasis."
On Houston Christian…
"They'll be one of the most athletic teams we face all season," Lamb said. "They get off blocks well on defense and take calculated risks. Offensively, they have the biggest offensive line we've seen, two really capable running backs, and a quarterback who can make all the throws. They're solid on special teams to, very sound, letting their athletes go to work."
On quarterback Eric Gibson's impact…
"He sees the game well," Lamb said. "We use the term 'precision passing offense,' and he can execute that at a high level. His ability to consistently move the football through the air has given us a spark. But we can't ignore the fact that the teams who've beaten us have done it running the ball. We've got to improve there."
On preparation and toughness…
"Number one, it always comes down to toughness," Lamb emphasized. "We've shown mental toughness and a willingness to fight for four quarters plus. But that can't just show up on game day, it's got to start early in the week with preparation and follow-through. Football, when it's boiled down, is a fight. We've got to prove we can win that fight on the road if we want to accomplish our goals this season."
Northern Colorado (1-2) and Houston Christian (1-2) square off Saturday night in Houston. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. MT.
