GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado football officially welcomed its newest Bear, signing 5-year-old quarterback Grayson through Team IMPACT, joining the team ahead of the 2025 season.
Grayson, born a fighter, was diagnosed within the first 48 hours of life with a congenital heart condition called TAPVR (Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Return). At just over two months old, he underwent open-heart surgery to repair his tiny heart, beginning a journey that has included more than 80 procedures and surgeries. Through it all, Grayson has shown unmatched courage and resilience, making him a perfect addition to the Bear family.
We are honored for Grayson to join the UNC Bears football team through Team Impact. As his parents, our greatest hope is that he experiences a true sense of belonging and is recognized for who he is beyond his medical diagnosis. We believe this opportunity will allow him to grow in confidence, form meaningful and lasting friendships, and feel the strength of a team standing beside him, said Grayson's mom, Ashley, While physical strength is often celebrated on the field, Grayson's journey has already shown us that the greatest strength comes from within—the resilience, courage, and determination he demonstrates every day. We are grateful to the UNC Bears and Team Impact for welcoming him into their family.
Despite the many medical challenges, including intestinal failure that prevents his body from processing food in the usual way, Grayson continues to thrive. He carries a backpack that provides the nutrients his body needs, a symbol of the determination and grit he brings into every situation. His light and joy inspire all who meet him.
Grayson has been a huge blessing in not only my life but many guys on the team as well, said freshman quarterback Gavin Lockett (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo West HS), He always brings such a great smile and energy to the team and we are so happy to be a part of his journey.
We are happy to sign Grayson to the UNC Football team, said Director of Player Personnel James Pazak, His positive attitude and work ethic are a great addition to our team!
Team IMPACT's unique multiyear program matches children facing serious illness and disability with college athletic teams across the country. Their mission is to guide children and teams alike in a mutually beneficial relationship of belonging, empowerment, and resilience.
Through this program, their vision is to create a world where every child facing serious illness and disability feels supported by something bigger, and every team is transformed by a greater purpose. When we're all in together, we all win together.
