FARMINGTON, Utah, -- Isaiah Hawthorn earned his first Big Sky Conference weekly honor of the season, league officials announced Tuesday.
Â
"We're really excited to hear that Isaiah has been named this week's Big Sky Player of the Week and it is well deserved," head coach Steve Smiley said. "His performance Saturday, especially dealing with illness, was crucial for us to get a great road win at Eastern Washington."
Â
After missing the game against Idaho Thursday, Jan. 23, with an illness, the graduate student from Tracy, California, returned to the Bears lineup at Eastern Washington two days later. He recorded 32 points and a team-high seven rebounds against the Eagles.
Â
"Down the stretch, Isaiah found his rhythm offensively and helped to carry us," Smiley said. "Isaiah has had a great season so far and has probably been really close to receiving this award in previous weeks, so I'm glad to see that it happened!"
Â
Hawthorne knocked down 10 of 16 shot attempts, including 4 of 6 from 3-point range and added eight points at the free-throw line on 10 shots. In a single contest, his 32 points rank second in the Big Sky this season.
Â
The Bears lead the Big Sky at 7-1 in league play, matching the 2010-11 squad for the best start in program history since joining the Big Sky.
Â
Hawthorne and the rest of the squad start a four-game stretch over eight days, with a 2 p.m. tip against Northern Arizona at Bank of Colorado Arena Saturday, Feb. 1.
