CHENEY, Wash. – Isaiah Hawthorne dropped 32 points in his return to lineup, propelling Northern Colorado (15-6, 7-1 Big Sky) to a 67-62 victory over Eastern Washington (6-15, 2-6 Big Sky) at Reese Court Saturday.
After missing Thursday's loss at Idaho due to an illness, Hawthorne hit 10 of 16 from the floor, including 4 of 6 behind the 3-point line and 8 of 10 from the charity stripe. The graduate student from Tracy, California registered the second highest point output by a Big Sky Conference player this season.
Trailing 59-57, with 2:23 remaining, UNC outscored the Eagles 10-3 to match their best start through eight Big Sky Conference games in program history. With the game tied at 59-all, Eastern Washington grabbed its last advantage on a layup with 1:13 left.
Langston Reynolds pulled the Bears even on a driving layup with 55 ticks showing on the board. UNC took possession after the Eagles threw the ball away for the second straight possession. Jaron Rillie pushed the Bears in front when he finished at the rim with his left hand at the 23-second mark.
Forced to foul after a third empty trip on an errant pass sent Rillie to the free-throw line for two attempts. He converted one and nudged the gap to 64-61, with 11 ticks left.
The Bears fouled before a potential game tying 3-point attempt, sending Eastern Washington to the charity stripe. The Eagles made the second attempt, before Hawthorne sank 3 of 4 in the last five seconds for the final margin.
Reynolds netted 17 points, four rebounds and four assists. Brock Wisne dropped in seven points, with five rebounds, three assists and a rejection. Rillie notched seven points, three rebounds and two assists.
NEXT HOME GAME: The Bears return to Bank of Colorado Arena Saturday, Feb. 1 at 2 p.m., when they host Northern Arizona.
