Bears Split Final Two Games of UNC Invitational

GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado finished off a busy week with a 4-1 mark after going 1-1 on the final day of the 2024 UNC Invitational at Bank of Colorado Arena Saturday.
Samantha Steele and Syd Cole earned UNC Invitational All-Tournament Team honors.
The Bears opened the day with a 3-1 victory over Rider, the second triumph over the Broncs in 18 hours.
Gabi Placide and Brynn Reines paced the Bears with 13 kills each, while Isabel Bennett added 12.
The defense recorded 50 digs, the most in a four-set match this season. UNC's defensive specialist collected 29 digs, with Samantha Steele anchoring the backline. She paced the Bears with 13, while GA McCarter added nine. Bella LePore dug out seven attacks, while Finley Schelhaus chipped in with two.
Combined with the 50 digs, UNC netted seven blocks and held Rider to the lowest hitting percentage by an opponent this season at .127 (40-24-126).
After a slow start offensively and splitting the first two sets, Northern Colorado trailed twice over the last two sets. The Bears hit .353 and .310 in games three and four, while limiting the Broncs to .226 and -.065.
In the nightcap, Ole Miss swept the Bears, who played their seventh match in eight days.
The Bears hit a season-low .163, converting 30 of 86 attacks with 16 errors. Ole Miss hit .263, just the second opponent to surpass .225 this season. The Rebels netted 39 kills on 99 swings, with 13 miscues.
Reines and Placide led the offense with nine kills each – the first time this season UNC failed to have a player tally double-digit kills.
Defensively, the Bears inked seven blocks to just six for Ole Miss. Bennett, Placide and Maddie Davies accounted for three each. Steele netted a match-high 15 digs.
