UNC Outlasts Ole Miss

GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado outlasted Ole Miss, winning the opening match of the 2024 UNC Invitational in five sets (21-25, 25-17, 25-22, 22-25, 15-9) at Bank of Colorado Arena Thursday.
Ole Miss (2-2) entered week two holding opponents to a .071 hitting percentage. The Bears (3-1) outhit the Rebels .231-.205 on their way to the victory.
Gabi Placide led three Bears with double-digit kills, with 15. Alayna Tessena tallied 14, with 11 digs for her first-career double-double. Brynn Reines totaled 11. Syd Cole notched her second consecutive double-double with 37 assists and 11 digs.
UNC tallied 13 aces at the service line, with Tessena leading the way with four. Cole added three, while Placide, Samantha Steele and Finley Schelhaas dropped in two each.
The Bears overcame dropping the first set – the first time this season – with a 25-17 victory in game two.
Following the intermission break, UNC ran off five of the final eight points to grab a 2-1 advantage.
Ole Miss turned the tables in set four. Knotted at 19-19, the Rebels doubled UNC for the 25-22 triumph, forcing a fifth game.
The Bears raced out to an 8-4 advantage at the side change and never looked back in the final game. They converted 42.9 percent (8-1-16) of their attacks and held the Rebels to 13.3 percent (4-2-15) in the decisive set.
