Bears Fall to Cal Poly

GREELEY, Colo. – David Hoage registered five tackles, including two for loss, with a pass break up and a quarterback hurry but Northern Colorado dropped a 28-7 result to Cal Poly in front of 4,495 at Nottingham Field Saturday.
Kia'i Keone tallied his first touchdown in a Bears uniform in the third quarter. Kaiden Box became the fourth quarterback to start and the fifth to play in five games for UNC this season. He made his collegiate debut and first career start.
Sam Iongi-Amituanai paced the defense with nine tackles, while Keenan Guthrie and Marcus Howard tallied seven a piece. Gutherie added a three-yard interception return. Darrell Bryant Jr. and Keyvon Lakes inked six tackles each. Franky Morales, Komari Owens and Noah Mangham each tallied a pass breakup.
Keone accounted for 160 yards of offense, including 55 on the ground on 16 carries. He completed 14 of 20 passes, for 115 yards. Box tallied 11 yards on 2 of 8.
Darius Stewart netted 22 rushing yards on nine carries, while Caden Meis totaled four rushes for 16 yards. Ryder MacGillivray led nine Bears in receptions with four for 41 yards, while Charles Garrison recorded 23 yards on two catches. Jordan Riles recorded 18 yards on two catches.
Cal Poly struck first with a 95-yard touchdown pass, with 5:08 remaining in the first quarter. The Mustangs drove 92 yards on seven plays and moved in front 14-0, with one second left in the opening period.
UNC capitalized on a blocked punt to cut the deficit in half, with eight minutes remaining in the third. Morales scooped up the loose ball after Zach Pekarek took it off the punter's foot and returned it to the Mustangs 15. On 3rd and 5, Keone scampered up the middle for the score.
Cal Poly responded with a seven-play 75-yard scoring drive on its next possession, opening the gap back to 14 at 21-7. The Mustangs ate up 7:57 of game time on a 14-play, 94-yard drive for the final touchdown.
