Bears Sweep State with Win over Denver
Â
DENVER – Maddie Davies and Syd Cole lead Northern Colorado to a four-set victory (18-25, 31-29, 25-20, 25-16) over Denver in the Mile Hile Classic – hosted by Denver – at Hamilton Gym Saturday.
With the victory, UNC defeated the other four NCAA Division I volleyball programs in Colorado this season, with each win occurring on the road.
"I am proud of winning the state," head coach Lyndsey Oates said. "We don't always get the opportunity to play all four schools in a season and that is a pretty significant accomplishment to get wins over all four, especially with all of them on the road. Colorado has good college volleyball and proving that we could be the best team in the state this year is something to be proud of."
Davies hit .400, with 16 kills and four errors on 30 swings, while blocking five attacks. Cole handed out 37 assists, with seven kills, seven digs, two aces and a block.
Â
"We had great offense from Maddie Davies again," Oates said. "Whenever we could get her the ball we did and she did good things for us."
The Bears struggled with their offense through the first two games, hitting .032 (10-9-31) in game one and falling behind early. They outlasted the Pioneers in the second set and evening the match at the intermission with an extra-point triumph, despite a .114 hitting percentage (13-8-44).
Â
"We didn't play perfectly, but we were gritty when we needed to be," Oates said. "We continued to find ways to slow them down as the match went on."
Â
UNC never trailed in game three and found more offense, while the defense continued its trend from game two and grabbed the advantage for the first time in the match.
Â
A service error by Denver knotted game four at 13-all and the Bears never looked back. They scored 12 of the final 15 points to close out the match.
