KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Stevo Poulin and Vincent Zerban advanced to the second day of the 2024 NCAA Championships T-Mobile Center Thursday.
No. 20 Poulin (21-6) earned a 3-1 victory over Missouri's Noah Surtin – ranked 13th in the 125-pound weight class – in the opening round of the tournament. He battled No. 4 Matt Ramos for the full seven minutes before suffering a hard-fought setback 4-2. Poulin needs three wins to secure his first All-American accolade and starts that road against No. 30 Elijah Griffin of California Baptist (22-13) in Friday's morning session.
At 157 pounds, No. 18 Zerban (26-4) completed Thursday needing just three wins for his first All-American honor. He suffered a takedown in the final 10 seconds and fell 4-1, in his opening bout to South Dakota State's No. 15 Cael Swensen (22-10). Zerban rebounded with a 6-2 triumph over Little Rocks Matty Bianchi (17-12), seeded 31 in the wrestle backs and takes on No. 16 Teague Travis of Oklahoma State (22-7) in Friday's morning session.
No. 9 Dominick Serrano wrapped up a successful first season in a Bears singlet Thursday, with a 26-8 mark at 133 pounds. He leads the Bears in wins, with 23, one ahead of Zerban. His six major victories pace UNC, while his seven tech falls rank second.
Tied 1-1 in his opening bout with 10 seconds remaining in the third period, Serrano suffered a tough loss with a last-second takedown by No. 24 Julian Chlebove of Arizona State (20-10). In his wrestleback bout, Serrano fell 19-10 to No. 25 Braden Basile of Army (23-13).
